Pros

- Really, really nice people working there - Probably one of the few places in Central Kentucky that can provide stable employment for professionals, especially in technology - Good benefits - Not bad salary - Sharp, highly professional employees

Cons

- A huge chunk (maybe even a majority) of the technical jobs are really "temporary" contractors who are employees in all but name. These contractors are often there for years and years before becoming "permanent" employees. A contractor will receive no promotions, and lousy benefits through the contracting company. Many of these people are promised they will get "real" jobs shortly, but that is just to keep them from quitting. These promises are often made for years. - Managers are usually completely out of touch. They spend all day in meetings. The "team leaders" are the real first level bosses. Higher managers never speak to someone too far down or up the totem pole. - Promotions are based on the department you work in (firmware and color science good, software and hardware bad, for example), or how well you fit into the magic scheme of aa - As someone else has said, the firmware group views people in other technical groups as no better than slime - Let's face it: the company probably can't last in its current size for too many years. The printer business is slowly dying, and Lexmark isn't the best player in the market by a long shot. It's best just to stay away.

Pros

Great cost-of-living in Lexington, KY, which is a beautiful city (horses, bourbon, and basketball!). Great pay considering such low cost-of-living. With the right manager, work hours can be very flexible. A good first-line manager can make make your daily job something you enjoy. Lots of very good, likable people to work around. Benefits are above average (health, 401K).

Cons

Lots of big corporation politics. Not all first-line managers are very good and a bad one will make your daily job miserable. Very few A players in middle to upper management and this trickles down. Management communication is horrible with misinformation and inability to clearly communicate the vision. Decision making is by committee so, everything is slooooowwww. Layoffs are way too frequent so, people are ousted to save money yet the company continues to give away their cash reserves to the stock dividend; a baffling strategy for a company with a shrinking market cap. The corporate culture is toxic in general. Promotions are almost always time-based and not merit-based. The best people do not become leaders so, be prepared to take orders from someone that you don't understand how they got to that position. Lots and lots and lots of meetings equal very little actual work from the majority of "leaders".

Pros

Easy commute in Lexington. Unlimited vacation. Lexmark is an expert at efficient layoffs, they can put together a list of employees to lay off and save millions in no time. Rooke is no longer CEO. Work life balance is great, you are not held accountable so take off whenever you want to. No one is ever around during holidays, they might as well just shut doors during Christmas, cause no one is there.

Cons

Where do I begin? Pay, good for the area but sub-par for the industry. Lack of promotions and raises will make your pay fall behind the national curve very quickly. Dying industry. Software(ISS) organization stuck in maintenance mode. Constantly updating current software packages. Worked on a team where a horrendous management decision allowed software package to be released before team felt it was ready. Many months of fixing bugs due to that one clueless decision. Software org is full of managers out of their prime or with no managerial skills whatsoever. The better managers were demoted because they were not "yes" people. If you are willing to brown nose you will do well, don't even have to do your job to excel. Culture is driven by Good ol' boy network. Management has no clue what they should be working on, they wait for execs to drive the direction. Execs have no software industry background. Constant reorganizations, at least once a year you will get assigned to a new manager. Have seen other reviews that state people as a pro, there was one team whose attitude was so vile that it kept getting re-organized/assigned to other managers. This team delivered very little work, but management didn't have the spine to confront their lack of professionalism. 80% of people are smart, easy to work with the other 20% just hope you don't ever have to deal with them or rely on their work. No career growth. Management will realign job responsibilities in order to build up their own resumes. Offshore teams are rarely if ever held accountable for their work. Have worked with offshore counterparts who were awesome. Others not so much. Offshore teams work on something, onshore team fixes their mistakes, and management turns the blind eye. Lack of training. Lexmark used to invest in their employees, that is no longer the case. Morale is never dealt with due to the incompetence of management. They will hold an event like a movie outing thinking it will boost morale. Culture wise, they don't follow what they preach. Inclusion, diversity, innovation are buzz words. They do promote women and non-whites quickly, but doesn't seem to be merit based.
