Pros

The kids are usually wonderful and always funny. The work itself is intense but satisfying.

Cons

Getting lied to. I always performed well according to my evaluations, and the fact that whenever a mentor observed my sessions I rarely had anything in the improve/refine column of the sheet they filled out. I was frequently promised that I would be promoted to other positions like mentoring and Star Training, but both of those positions were granted to employees with less experience, one of whom was seasonal and only worked 2-3 months out of the year, while I was year-round. Also, Lindamood-Bell Academy was a nightmare. I taught English to several students in the last half of the school year. I originally started with two, but a third was randomly dumped in my lap without any warning or time to prepare. That student was at an entirely different spot in the curriculum, and so trying to catch him up with 3-4 weeks left in the semester was nearly impossible. Furthermore, I was frequently instructed by the pre-written curriculum to teach the subject incorrectly. I have a bachelor's and master's in English, the master's being from Columbia, so I know this subject like the back of my hand, and I know the curriculum was wrong on numerous occasions. These children are intended to re-integrate into a normal school environment at some point, and by mis-educating them we not only make it much harder to accomplish that and for them to continue to succeed in that normal environment. Not to mention how this will result in them being ill-equipped to deal with the world beyond school. This is really just scratching the surface. I don't want to be writing a review all day long, so I'm going to end it here.

Literacy for sale

Pros

The programs work (Seeing Stars and LiPs especially - VV, OCN, Academy, and talkies seem to be far less research-validated and more about selling products and instruction to families). Seeing a student’s daily and weekly successes is gratifying. They cater lunches for employees, bring donuts, etc. I may not get benefits, but pizza parties are great for morale.

Cons

You are severely underpaid. I received 3 promotions while there with only one pay raise. You are part-time, but often get full-time hours when you are busy (but no benefits). The program is very expensive, thus making literacy a product only wealthy families can afford. The company is far more interested in profit than actual instruction (IE rolling out Academy without even beta-testing or doing trials). And because it is ran by corporate in California, every center has a “one-size-fits-all” approach to operations, even down to office decor.

They Don't Care About their Staff

Pros

Every day will be different and their programs do work.

Cons

The pay is very low for what is expected of the employees. Management does nothing to motivate its employees, even though "by design" they have cards that can be given to employees recognizing good sessions with students. The managers rarely will write one. You only get 5 minutes in between students, and that is just enough time to go to the restroom, and then you dive right back into another session with a student. The chairs are uncomfortable and bad for people's backs. Did I say that the pay sucks? This summer, they are having people do group instruction, but NO extra pay for that! Incredible. This company exploits its employees, they overwork their office managers, and they try out new systems during the busiest seasons. There is no support from management with behavioral issues from these students and I have never seen any student not get a recommendation for more Lindamood-Bell. They charge the parents an arm and a leg, but if only the parents knew what the clinicians are being paid -- I think they would get physically ill.
