Pros

Risk management focus has helped reduce the firms exposure to fines experienced by other investment banks. Ability to be exposed to high level deals and transactions across the firm. Leader in commodities and infrastructure investment banking with high deal flow. Growing reputation and name brand in the US. Free breakfast (fruit, full cereal bar, snacks, etc).

Cons

Managers and Senior Managers in Market Operations division have not been trained how to properly support the employees that they manage. Toxic environment where management hands off the projects with the highest risk to those below them and the managers are the first to accuse those below them if there are any problems. The training is "on the job" with little to no supervision. Little to no opportunity to advance career in the department. High rate of outsourcing to India, so the job security is uncertain. Legacy systems include a mainframe system which is 30 years outdated. Lower than industry average bonuses for Senior Associates.

Pros

Good pantry. Free granola bars and cereal for breakfast. If you are not ambitious or like the environment of a government type job, then this is an ok place to stay until retirement.

Cons

All key roles are held by expat australians. Americans are treated with suspicion and generally relegated to second tier roles. Company is very bureaucratic and it is impossible to get any major deals done. We are not respected in the marketplace, and potential customers generally snicker when we mention macquarie. The management and its PR machine makes it worse by constantly repeating the statement "we are the goldman sachs of australia". Management is petty and very stingy watching nickels and dimes more closely than any other place I've been at. Moreover, very unethical management (by American standards). Top management routinely has open affairs with female subordinates, and is condoned - maybe even encouraged amongst the expat crowd.

Pros

Only positive is that the company is well known so it looks "Great" on your resume

Cons

Everything about this place is horrible. From management to culture. Felt like I worked at a call center. No work life balance. Slavery
