Pros

Free snacks, friendly employees, that's about it.

Cons

Management making terrible decisions across the board. They just layed off many people and kept workers who said yes over those who consistently created results. They're hiring is terrible, relying on a candidate profile that isn't listed on the application -- i.e. hiring sales people to do data heavy positions (doesn't matter now, that team barely exists) regardless of the incoming sales being completely inept and constantly needing things cleaned up after him. It's even worse when they refused to move the best contract researcher to FTE and let her go and hired a sales person who increased my workload. The departments don't speak to each other either and have no idea of who handles what and there is no escalation chain in place. The teams that support and interact with each other have no clue what the other is doing.

Hi there, Sorry to hear that you’ve had such a negative experience. We are listening to your feedback; Marin truly cares about the opinions of all our employees (past and present). While Marin did make some some tough operational decisions recently, we’ve done so to clear a path that returns the company to growth. Unfortunately, we have parted ways with some very talented and much respected team members and that is always a painful experience. These decisions are never taken lightly at Marin, but our focus remains on strengthening the company’s core platform, delighting our customers, and building a foundation for sustained growth. While our strategy is starting to yield positive results, we realize the effort and commitment that so many people have made to revitalizing the company. If you would like to talk directly with us about these changes, we’d be happy to connect. Please contact hr@marinsoftware.com anytime.

Pros

Work-life balance. For a medium-sized company in the Bay Area, I would say their work-life balance is fairly decent. Usually I don't have an issue working just the expected 8 hours per day. Unlimited sick leave + 15 days of PTO Decent salary, decent kitchen/stocked fridge Depending on your luck, you could have an awesome manager, tech lead and interesting projects. QA get all the window seats Not much in the ways of crazy politics, backstabbing colleagues, etc. In fact, I found quite a few friends here.

Cons

Almost no one works remotely and this is only done if you're sick. This is somewhat of an issue - although there is unlimited sick leave, there's often the expectation that we work from home while we are sick. No 401k matching. High turnover. A lot of the senior employees are leaving, leaving fewer people to mentor the new hires. This is made worse by the fact that Marin likes to hire new college grads who often need training, but lack the right mentors (since so many are leaving). Not particularly Agile at all. There is often bureaucracy that stops Agile in its tracks, despite this not being a big company. The micromanaging tendencies of a few have quite possibly led to more than one employee choosing to leave. Certain teams are understaffed and overworked and Marin does not seem to be trying very hard to recruit in those areas. This should certainly take priority over hiring more new grads.

To address your concerns: We do allow people to work remotely if it is prearranged with their manager. It is the preference to work on-site as in-person collaboration is often more effective. As for management training, we are currently rolling this out for everyone who has a direct report. Recruiting senior software engineers is definitely a focus for us and happy to report that we have just hired 4 senior software engineers. The Bay Area/Silicon Valley is incredibly competitive, and all of our engineers are amazingly talented individuals. But rather than having just another “warm body” join our team, we do want to focus on fit. Turnover is rampant in technology companies everywhere and we are unfortunately not immune to it.

Pros

was a great company when i joined few years ago with a strong focus on innovation. Working from home, flexibility, very good salary and benefits, offices location in the center. Bright people.

Cons

too many Exec changes with no clear vision. Strong gap in the product innovation, behind now if comparing to competitors on both social and Search. Lots of staff turnover during the last years + company downsizing recently, they have lost some good people with strong knowledge.
