Pros

I've had the benefit of job security and good health insurance. I really find the physicians to be "real" people, more so with the younger physicians. They are very appreciative of employees at all levels.

Cons

The large problem remains with management at all levels and also with the outdated ideals of the older physicians that I find to be detrimental to the evolution of good healthcare and also nearly impossible to make Mass General more efficient. Compensations is below market value for lower level administrators and many jobs have evolved without the appropriate increase in compensation. MGH truly lives up to the popular phrase thrown around that it rewards hard workers by overburdening them with the work of the bad workers and throwing a blind eye to what the managers know as true.

Pros

Provides excellent, top notch patient care. Location is great.

Cons

Majority of management is "deadwood". Nurses in outpatient units are managed by "non-nursing, non-clinical managers". There is no recourse or protection for employees or nurses when needed again poor treatment by management. Human Resources Department is useless to employees. Only option is to leave. Nursing pay scales are poor.

Pros

MGH offers good pay and benefits, and opportunities for growth. For secretarial positons, it was surprisingly easy to get hired with little screening. (There was no skill testing unlike other hospitals.)

Cons

I can only speak for the Pathology Dept secretarial pool which is known for its high-turnover rate. The setting is a closed-in space of 6 transcriptionists. There was a lot of backstabbing and what I call "front-stabbing" - open hostility and a personal fued between four of the secretaries - a total lack of professionalism and respect. There was no disciplinary action of any kind. There was talk of "change" but nothing happened. One particular worker was known as the troublemaker, but no matter how many complaints, nothing was done because she was the supervisor's favorite, which fueled a lot of resentment. The atomsphere was so toxic that HR was brought in but still nothing changed. Everyone eventually left. MANAGEMENT IS NONEXISTENT.
