Poor system for assigning staff to projects. It seemed that people were either over staffed or understaffed, and the organization doesn’t have a good way to distribute the workload more evenly. When you’re understaffed there is constant pressure to increase your billable hours, but you have almost no control over getting assigned to more projects. Advice from managers is to “email your teams to see if there’s anything else you can take on.” You must promote yourself heavily to get assigned to leadership roles, and managers seemed to have little understanding of your actual skills and how you might be best utilized on projects.
