Even though I felt excited initially about contributing to clinical research, the negative culture here just outweighs any positive feelings of personal satisfaction. I wish I had paid more attention to reviews on here and advice from friends who used to work here who warned me the micromanaging was awful.
-Even though they won’t admit it, the executives are clearly trying to phase out WFH with the recent reduction in WFH days. They blamed it on WFH being a “temporary” solution from COVID, and that now’s the time to encourage a more “office-centric culture”, but I was hired after COVID began. In my interview, I was specifically told WFH would be one of my benefits. It doesn’t matter to me that WFH was intended to be temporary, because I was hired with an expected benefit of plentiful WFH days. Every single coworker I’ve talked to is angry about this change, but we all know upper management doesn’t care at all and won’t change their minds. If you can successfully do your job at home, why does it matter where you work? And wouldn’t encouraging more WFH address the parking shortage they’re so worried about? As long as you’re getting your job done, who cares if it’s at home? And I know they’ll say it’s because they want more people to be here to train new employees, but even during my onboarding training, my manager was often WFH. We did the trainings over Teams and it did not negatively impact my training at all. It’s just so frustrating that WFH is a benefit that so many people look forward to and cherish, and now they’re pulling it back. It’s clear that some time within the next year, they’re going to force us all to be back in office full-time.
-Myself and my friends/family have never worked at a company that requires you to do flex time when you need to leave early for a doctor’s appointment, dentist appointment, etc. This was something I was kind of shocked by during my interview, and it really has become such a pain. Again, as long as I’m getting my work done, why does it matter? I constantly feel like someone is breathing down my neck logging my hours. As someone with a PhD, this feels like something that’s more appropriate for an intern/entry level position. Having to work 2+ hours longer one day so I can leave early the next feels degrading and like I’m being worked like a dog.
-It’s clear that the upper management/executives are extremely out of touch with the day-to-day culture of the company at large. If they were in touch with us, they never would have made this revision to the WFH policy, because every single person I’ve talked to about it is angry and thinking of quitting. We’ve already lost 2 people in our department after the announcement came out. Feels like they’re just using this as an excuse to get people to quit without having to fire them.
