CHALLENGING AND REWARDING IN EQUAL MEASURE

Pros

MegaNexus staffers are great people to work with. They're a team of smart, sociable and passionate people who really care about what they do and are trying to provide a great professional service and build a quality product. Work life is fast paced with some big infrastructure projects going on. At times it can seem like a hard slog with little down time, but the reward is that you're doing something that can change the lives of others in a good way and are working alongside other people who feel the same way. It's not a place where you can coast along. You have to want to get stuck in and better still if you have a bit of an entrepreneurial streak. If you put in the hours and do a good job there's opportunity to progress - but it is demanding.

Cons

Management is trying hard, but they need to give a clearer strategic direction. They are often too busy to provide much practical help.

NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED

Pros

It's fair to say that MegaNexus isn't for the faint hearted. It's a small company so there are no frills and your don't often get a slack day as there's so much to do. You're frequently left to your own devices to just get on with your work. I kind of liked this as I don't like to be micro-managed and learned a lot this way - even if a lot of the learning was from the mistakes I made. The product is very interesting, using technology to reach and benefit the most deprived, and most neglected, in our society. This gives a real sense of being part of something that's bigger than you are, that you're doing something worthwhile with your life, something that can change lives in a positive way. However, and this is important, it's strictly a commercial enterprise, so don't join expecting a touchy-feely place, because it's not like that and you will be disappointed. If you're up for it you can learn a lot - both about the sectors you work in and what you're personally capable of doing. It can be a great leg-up to bigger and better things as you'll leave knowing so much more than when you started. You can go on to work with diverse organisations in either the public/charity sectors or stay on the commercial side (especially tech or large commercial providers to the public sector.)

Cons

You definitely need to know when to ask for help, be okay about asking for it, and push to get the advice/information you need. So employees find the combination of workload and lack of direction very stressful - more sink that swim.

Pros

The main pro, I realise it’s been said before - very decent people. There are no office politics (relatively speaking!) and the staff are definitely the best thing about the organisation. I can't think of a negative thing to say about any member of staff, and that includes management. They have had a tough time recently but everyone's heart is in the right place which is certainly something you can't say for every company you work for. It certainly makes a job a lot easier (and more productive) when you get on well with everyone you work with. The work is generally pretty positive and rewarding, again something you don’t get everywhere. The clients are a real mix, from lots of different industries and sectors. Definitely something new in each case. The development team is in-house, which works really well. Great communication across teams (most of the time!) and generally much more efficient.

Cons

Always the main focus of any review - how many people take the effort to review something they like compared to something they don't? However, my lasting memory is not one of a negative environment at all. Sure, there is a huge amount of improvement needed but nothing insurmountable. As a small/medium company, the ability to change is within easy reach, as long as it is driven by everyone.
