Pros

The job isn't that hard. The day to day customer work is interesting and fun. The clients are generally nice.

Cons

I was acquired along with some computer equipment and office furniture when MBO bought our company a few years ago. Since then, the entire organization has been bought by private equity. This is a story we're all familiar with - private money buys the company, and the company cuts costs, corners, and employee morale to maximize profit. I can't blame them for this - business is going to business. However - I can blame them for the abhorrent and terrifying robot zoom bosses that have overtaken the company culture. Stepford wife level men and women smile through endless all hands calls. 20 Min of each call is a round table of cringey 'fun facts about the C suite' as a moderator asks each Director and above what their favorite movie is, or guilty pleasure. Robot bosses smile with perfect teeth and perfect hair - informing us we are all doing really good jobs, and are profitable - however not profitable to provide competitive salaries. The saying goes you dont quit jobs you quit bosses - and these bosses are inauthentic plastic. Cold, hard plastic. Competent senior employees are passed over for promotion in favor of former Vista equity experienced management. Employees are paid dramatically different amounts based on almost nothing (veteran employees are the most under paid so you'll probably make out ahead here). The job itself is a modern take on a Soviet classic. We fill out time sheets, punch KPI and check boxes. Its irrelevant what work is actually done as long as the boxes are checked and the tallies approved. (literally, nobody checks what work you do, only that you check off the boxes). Employees who succeed will be rewarded with additional workload, assigned the most difficult customers, and given the most inauthentic Stepford Smile - as you're informed there is no money for pay, but we can all take comfort in the mission of MBO!

I HATE working here

Pros

Laid back working environment....approachable manager. The people are cool, and we can get away with a lot, so long as no narcs are around. Good health benefits and plenty (20 days) of PTO are nice.

Cons

I absolutely hate working here. The pay is atrocious. They don't care whether you went to a trade school and dropped out, or if you graduated from a well-known university with a Masters, your salary offer will be the same, and there is no negotiating. Which is awful because the salary they will offer you will be far far away from industry standard or "competitive." The raises are nominal (~3%). And the "quarterly CVA bonuses" are a joke (~$80). There is absolutely no way to make a living here. After all my living expenses (and I live like a college student with 4 roommates in a small house), I only make about $400 a month to put into a savings account, and I have a second job as well. Everyone who works at MINDBODY either lives in Atascadero (tweaker central) or Arroyo Grande, and not beautiful San Luis Obispo. Why? Because it's as expensive as the Bay Area to live in. If you do live in SLO, be prepared to have a spouse who makes much more than you because there is no other way to make it. This company is so ass-backwards. All that matters to them is their BS core values. So if you do something extremely helpful and it results in a ton more sales, they expect you to be humble and not brag about it or bring it to anyone's attention. You just have to get recognized somehow. Also, they offer free (you get wellness credits) on-site massages, but they just increased the price on that as well. There are many people who work here that have NO IDEA what it means to work efficiently. Here's a brilliant idea: when you come in in the morning and check your tickets, answer the urgent ones first, the easy ones second, and then the rest based on when they were received. Instead, you get a bunch of pissed off clients waiting for a day and a half to receive a simple 'yes' answer or a number to call. I work as efficiently as possible, and I'm sure your real CEO (Bob) would love to know this, and he'd love to know why I'm getting paid the exact same as someone who gets half the jobs completed per month as I do. But nope, sadly this does not occur, and many of the directors and managers do not care about the pace that people work at, so long as they are doing work. This is no way to run a company. But MINDBODY does not fire people, except for in two instances. 1) Sales not meeting goals, and 2) (sexual or other) harassment issues....which brings me to my next point.... The people that work here are extremely sensitive. The smallest off hand or college kid type of comment will get you in trouble. So you have to be extremely careful about what you say and who you are with when you say it. Otherwise you'll get reported. People here don't understand that you should talk to someone and tell them they are offending you if they are, instead of just going straight to HR. I could go on and on, but I believe you get the point. Nothing I say here will change anything. I mean it took them 3 months to find a Compensation Manager who agrees with the minuscule amount we get paid for the high level and high security work we do. Oh yeah, it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when a data breach will happen. You give people as much access to client lists and information as you do here, and you pay them garbage, you are asking for trouble. :)

Thank you for your review. There's a lot of information here about your negative experience. You mention a lot of things here that I wish I could address issue by issue but I'll stick to my overall point, I sincerely hope you talk with your manager and a member of our People and Culture team right away. Please don't wait to do this. Your experience here matters to us and it sounds like there needs to be some issues cleared up immediately so you can enjoy your job and coming to work everyday. You can drop in to talk to someone from People and Culture at any time, no appointment necessary. I hope you get some of these issues resolved quickly and perhaps think about other opportunities if you are not happy here. It's not worth staying at a company if your values don't align with the organizations. Since this is a public forum and anonymous, there's not much more I can say only that I truly hope you reach out (we encourage this) to your manager at your next 1:1.

Pros

The work atmosphere is generally good. The people are nice. Decent 401(k) match: 100% match up to 3% of your salary then 50% match between 4% and 5% of your salary. Good health benefits for the employee, though you have to be management to get affordable coverage for your dependents. Very good stock option: purchase MB stock at a discounted rate up to 15% of your salary.

Cons

If you're hourly, the trend has been towards micromanagement. There is not a lot of transparency around salaries or departmental budgets. If you live in the San Luis Obispo County, the pay doesn't justify itself against the cost of living (to be fair, this is more of a county-wide issue).

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! We’re glad to hear that you enjoy your work atmosphere and benefits. We’ve worked very hard to hire great people with Core Values and all work together to make work a great place to be. It’s true, San Luis Obispo County is a wonderful place to live, which also makes it more expensive than some other areas of the country. We hired a Compensation Manager to make sure our salaries are in-line with market rates, and have made increases to take care of our team. That continues to be an ongoing effort throughout the company. As we continue to grow as a company, we’re always working to improve our processes. As you note, this does create a lot of change, and we try to be as transparent about the “what” and “why” of those changes as possible. We aren’t seeking to micromanage our team members — who we hire because they’re very good at what they do — but are instead striving to create a better, more consistent experience for our team members and our customers. Thanks again for being a part of the MINDBODY team! It is because of team members like you that we can continue to succeed as a business and to deliver on our mission of leveraging technology to improve the wellness of the world.
