Pros

They know how to hire great people and therefore the client services are great because the doctors and nurses in the actual clinics are wonderful.

Cons

Team often feels like they are being gaslighted by upper management. Company growing too quickly. Disorganized. Feels like the company operates like a plane that is flying midair while still trying to build components to the plane with human beings on board. Upper management says they listen and hear employees concerns and they continue to just say change is uncomfortable but majority of staff still feels unheard. Upper management loves to self congratulate a LOT as a way to “keep morale up” but it often feels delusional. Have heard employees express that they feel like they were sold a positive company culture before being hired and now feel like none of it is true. Ultimately over promised, under delivered on so many levels. Continues to say in their adverts for new hires that they won’t make you do things you don’t want to do and how they focus on the mental well-being of staff but I have seen so many employees leave work in tears because of how toxic the culture feels.

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback. We deeply understand the issues that plague the veterinary profession and are working tirelessly to build processes and procedures that support our employees, but you're right, that may feel like we're building the plane while we're flying it. We recently closed our clinics down for a week to announce operational adjustments that were created as a direct result of the feedback that we have heard from our doctors and nurses. These go into place towards the end of April. We know we haven't always gotten it right, but we are committed to seeking feedback and making the appropriate changes as quickly as possible to create a great place to work.

It's all a facade! Don't fall for it!

Pros

My team truly was great. I honestly loved going into work with my fellow coworkers. The nurses are great and passionate about their work, some of the hardest working/passionate people I've ever met. Most of the doctors are also really great and I would completely trust them with my pets. I have absolutely 'trauma' bonded with multiple peers and created lifelong friendships. Free swag. Great sweatshirts, totes, t-shirts, hats, etc.

Cons

This is the most toxic environment I have ever worked in. When you hear the words ‘toxic positivity’, Modern Animal screams and lives it. They care so much about no negative conversations on the treatment floor that they have fired/let go of more employees in a year than I have ever seen in my 10 years in the veterinary industry. I agree with the sentiment that Modern is Banfield 2.0. They really don’t give doctors that much freedom to make their own treatment plans and decisions. Profitability and numbers are constantly being brought up. They care more about meeting numbers set up by the team of “business operations”, than truly about the quality of medicine they are providing for their patients. Technicians literally have had conversations from leadership about how to sell more items during their appointments. The most upsetting part is the facade that they hide under. They are quite literally doing the opposite of ‘changing the veterinary industry’ as they advertise. They care more about numbers, expansion, their outward appearance, than their actual employees. Their motto “Build for Humans” is the most upsetting in my opinion. I have seen everything BUT building for their actual humans that work for this company. They recognize that there is burn out in the team - multiple callouts, high turnover rate, low morale. But instead of really addressing the issue and listening to their team, they fire everybody, guilt trip those who are calling out, put more work on those who actually show up, and show very little appreciation to those who actually do show up. They say they care about what the actual team members have to say, but they really don’t. Engagement surveys are sent, but nothing is done about them. Any time you bring up an issue at work, it somehow get thrown back at you that you are the problem and no change is needed. If there’s one thing I can advise any VA, VN, or DVM is that you should REALLY consider everything being presented to you before taking on this job. Have everything in writing. There are a lot of broken promises that will be made to get you to sign on, but it is just down hill from there. You get no unpaid time off. You barely accrue any PTO. And despite them encouraging you to not do OT, the lack of leadership leads the team to constantly stay late in overtime.

Pros

Free tattoos, okay merch, maybe some yummy snacks.

Cons

Looking on the outside Modern Animal gives the appearance of sunshine and rainbows but up close it’s nothing but a dumpster fire. Spent $10,000 on a YouTube series called Contemporary Creatures that never saw the day of light because it was deemed inappropriate and racist. Would rather give people ‘free’ tattoos than give their staff livable working wages. Work-life balance is a joke. There are clients that are rude, demeaning, and aggressive towards the staff but Modern Animal just throws money at them or gives them free treatments to make them happy and shut up. A member wrote a review about wanting to become physically violent with an employee, but instead of addressing the violence and letting the client know that is unacceptable they just gave them free medication. Modern Animal is all about what we can do to make members happy again when they become upset. They never stand up for their employees. Here at Modern, the customer is always right. I guarantee that if you write a bad review, Modern Animal will give you money or do whatever means necessary to make you take down that review. Also, it is really nice when clients come in who are intoxicated and on drugs, but hey let's give them so many chances and make everyone uncomfortable before firing them. So much for a better vet for all. Upper leadership will most likely not check up on employees after clients make them visibly upset because you are replaceable in their eyes and they are only in this for the money. None of the clinics are profitable and their flows are not working, but hey let’s open more clinics and pretend everything is just fine. Good luck getting a break. Upper leadership is aware breaks are not being taken because there is no help or time but as long as the job gets done who cares about your well-being and mental health. Upper leadership might tell you they are looking into it/working on it, but that’s all you will ever get. Just best to report them to the Labor Department for break violations. They are more likely to fire staff who get stressed out about the lack of help/support than staff who do multiple no-call, no shows. It’s really just sad. Modern Animal had the promise of being that change for the better and they actually seemed like they cared, but when you have people running the company who have zero vet experience, good luck!
