Pros

The leadership wasted so much time and money by kicking the can down the road, lying to everyone about the state of the technology, and pretending to commercialize a product that was nowhere ready. Tried to scale too early, by pretending to have solved the hard problems. Signing bonuses and retention bonuses for heroes. Generous bonuses for a pre-revenue company.

Cons

You need more than a few heroes to build a business. The company had to scrap commercialization plans and cut 40% of the workforce after 4 years in existence. It had plenty of time to address the risks before they became huge problems. Massive fail.

OK management, ridiculous HR team

Pros

Nice offices with expected 'Silicon Valley' style perks, engineering teams well resourced with good leadership (especially the hardware side of the company). BD teams were perhaps too effective at securing external partnerships for deployments. Strong financial backing from Hyundai (pay was pretty good for a non-costal job).

Cons

Program management operated in an extremely myopic fashion; was very clear the program managers in charge were more concerned with having a good 'scorecard' rather than fostering the development of a scalable product. Despite the strong financial backing of Hyundai, the working relationship was very dysfunctional in most areas, especially engineering and with regard to communication (downplaying) of risks. I've never seen an HR org more drunk on wokeness & power (and I've worked at Google).

Motional Response

Thank you for your review. I’m sorry to hear you didn’t have the positive experience we want for everyone on the Program Management team. Since I joined the company earlier this year, we’ve made a number of strategic changes within the TPM team to drive critical programs forward and prepare for upcoming commercial launches at scale. While change takes time, I am confident we have the right team and structure in place to meet our ambitious targets and tackle one of the greatest technical challenges of our lifetimes. I appreciate you sharing your personal perspective and while I disagree with your comments about Motional’s TPM organization, I wish you the best of luck in your next chapter. Best, Balajee Kannan, VP, Technical Programs
