Social work dept is a mess

Pros

Nothing really, Sinais business model is to take advantage of new social work graduates, work them to death for 2-3 years, and when they get their lcsw leave they just get new hires from the next graduating class. In other hospitals senior social workers have 10+ years of experience. In Sinai if you make it last 3 years you are considered a veteran. Leadership sucks and is out of touch and just cashing a check. Supervisors in particular are useless as they just are playing a game of telephone and pass on whatever dumb directives upper leadership have. The one time I had a good supervisor, he was laid off when the dept downsized. Figures. I had some great coworkers, across several depts, that and generally good relationships with the doctors and nurses I work for are the only reason I’m still here as I look for something else.

Cons

There are serious leadership issues all across the social work dept from the highest directors to down to supervisors. For years now we have had no single “director” and the lack of leadership shows. When half the care management dept got laid off, there was absolutely no effort made by leadership to protect staff. And instead they hurt staff by providing layoff letters stating false statements to avoid having to pay unemployment insurance. A absolutely horrible thing to do from so called “social workers” in leadership positions. There has been wide ranging accusations of racism and nepotism, particularly in the inpatient social work teams that is finally now exploding into public view as several official accusations in the oncology dept are now being investigated and have lead to the resignation of one of the directors. White, Jewish females hold a predominant stranglehold on the social work dept and it shows with how many micro-aggressions minority staff deal with. This dept is a complete mess and I highly recommend avoiding to work here and going to a union hospital as there is no job security here for social workers, which is unheard of in the other nyc hospitals. Lastly, leadership has made no effort to have a dept holiday party despite every other dept in the hospital having one. While silly, it shows the complete lack of respect and effort by sw leadership to at least have some kind of thank you event for staff, considering we see all the other depre have one.

Pros

Overall standard of medical care is good and most physicians have their patients' best interest at heart

Cons

Top heavy bureaucracy Multiple redundant levels of administrators who somehow think they are the ones that are indispensable. Time for healthcare workers to unionize and push back
