Pros

Very diverse project types. Surrounded by talented individuals with diverse and niche experience. Almost everyone is willing to share knowledge. You could literally make a career change while staying an NV5 employee should you find a new direction that interests you in facilities, project/program management, marketing, or any type of engineering. You have to show real motivation and work hard to make this happen, but is definitely possible. There is never a shortage of work. My particular office does a variety of project sizes. Haven't had to deal with typical hire and layoff cycles that come with relying on one or two large projects. Thanks

Cons

Many firms have been acquired and the type of work each office or region may perform varies greatly. How do you use or share resources efficiently when you have little knowledge of what hundreds of others are capable of? Benefits are only average. Not the lowest healthcare premiums. Really disappointing that they don't have any type of 401k matching. Haven't received any type of bonus or profit sharing in my years of employment. With a variety of current projects and schedules, an individuals workload can be difficult to manage. Especially when you have multiple PMs that might obligated you to overlapping deadlines. This seems to be to frequently a problem (but maybe just part of the world in consulting engineering.) Could be less of a problem in other office locations.

Changing for the better

Pros

Tremendous growth and opportunity for people who want to build opportunities and not just take a job; upper management aggressively fosters entrepreneurial spirit partly driven by need to continually generate interest and purchase of shares of the Company (some see this as a negative inherent to publicly-traded companies but it is a real necessity and can be a tremendously positive experience for many) and partly through senior management’s own vision and philosophical culture overall. Big project wins and market diversifications are exciting. Company is also actively pursuing improved internal synergies and opportunities with more focus on intra-company communication and engagement. If you think out of the box, have great business acumen, and can help the Company be successful, you will enjoy the budding culture! If you are more technically driven and have a passion for high quality, cost effective work then you also enjoy the emerging culture with focus on providing improved, higher-quality services to clients as well.

Cons

Per above, you can’t escape the real-world demands of continually meeting and exceeding financial performance expectations of shareholders while also meeting or exceeding the expectations of client’s for high quality technical and cost/schedule performance. And in the mix, there is the need of meeting and exceeding staff expectations as employees or shareholders themselves. Some local/regional managers are not yet fully assimilated in a common [business] culture and vision having come from past acquisitions and mergers, so this may contribute to some of the disparities and concerns as mentioned in other reviews, but the Company is now actively addressing such issues for the better.

Pros

Good teamwork, collaborative environment. Good amount of celebratory food type events during the work day throughout the year. Amazing CDO and employee resource groups and support of minority employees. Flexible unpaid time off when you inevitably run out of PTO and flexible schedule within reason for your responsibilities. There are a lot of good people that still work here from the small company days. Management is trying to improve some things on a corporate timeframe (very slow). Big company does mean you could probably transfer easily across the country/to Canada with recent merger if you're looking for that opportunity.

Cons

Micromanagement, low wages, drama with promotions, highly stressful. Company cares more about margins than delivering quality data and providing a career to the production team. Upper management is out of touch and overly involved in technical decisions that they don't understand. Years served usually means more to management than individual competency (in terms of promotions and opportunities). Benefits are just okay, most people use their spouse's if possible. Company shortcomings are seeing a severe brain drain occur. Wouldn't trust this company for a career let alone job security unless you have a lot of patience and budgeting skills. Working here kinda looks bad in the geospatial world as most everyone knows it's just a data factory, if you care about a geospatial career you'll have to work pretty hard and/or get lucky to move from here.
