Continuous limbo - heavy toll on mental health

Pros

Inspiring colleagues and products! For the beginning of my time, it was the most wonderful thing to come in everyday and work with a team of amazing people and I was so proud of the work I was doing. I came in at a pivotal moment for the company and truly felt the importance of my work, even if it only lasted a short time . My direct manager was the epitome of a leader and empowered us all to perform.

Cons

What happened over the last few months at NI has been complete heartbreak. We all live in limbo everyday to see who's getting cut and who stays. No real communication to any of us and we are treated like cattle. No trust in management whatsoever. And other than my amazing colleagues, it's hard to feel team spirit when even the people who run the company can't be bothered to meet or talk with you as a human. We come in everyday inspired and wanting to work and we were constantly stomped on. If you don't fall into the "white male" category, be prepared to potentially hit the glass ceiling. I'm fed up and will be leaving. And in general, when you lose trust in the decisions being made, it's only a matter of time before the whole thing sinks. Rest in peace, NI.

We appreciate your feedback and we realize it is a difficult time of change at Native. Parting ways with our colleagues has been the most difficult part of our transformation, but we had to make some structural changes in order to be able to execute on the new vision. From what I understand, you are still employed by NI, so before you decide to leave, we ask that you give us a chance to respond to your concerns at our next All Hands. We will be addressing the topics you mentioned here.

Incompetence has driven this company into the ground

Pros

Not sure. Who doesn't have espresso machines and beer fridays? Perhaps one pro is their reaction to the company survey results of which the prime issue was under market salaries. Management responded via the mass lay offs. I suppose that is A response.

Cons

In my 20 years of professional career I have never worked for such a mismanaged company nor have I ever been subjected to such a toxic and unsafe workplace. I watched as managers and team members around me took multiple stress leaves to survive the day to day turmoil. I reported multiple HR compliance issues including discrimination, threats of violence, bullying and was met with an ill equpped HR team that failed to do anything. I don't even think the lack of action was intential rather they simply didn't know HOW to react. I appreciate the challenge NI is facing to cut high operating costs to improve profit margin and have worked at multiple companies in financial and organizational distress who had to let employees go but was shocked at how poorly prepared leadership was to react to these challenges. Just look at the canned response they are copying and pasting to each employee review. If they can't even afford creative and empathetic responses to their own employees how can you expect them to be able to respond to their user needs? They say in their responses that they are starting company wide Q&A but watch out, the last time they did this Danel Harver made cringe-worthy sexist comments again demonstrating how disconnected this leadership team is with reality. What is there to investigate? the evidence is right in front of you.

We appreciate your candid feedback. The HR issues you mention are deeply concerning and I'd like to investigate them further and understand why no action was taken as you have outlined. I understand you are a current employee so please reach out directly to me (Chief People Officer). To reassure you, any cases that have been raised with the People Team to date have been fully investigated and appropriate action taken.

Pros

There are still a few talented and passionate colleagues at the teams level who haven't been laid off or driven to quit by management decisions, yet. Furthermore, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, it is indisputably a great experience to learn how NOT to run a company.

Cons

The situation has been going from bad to worse over the last few years, a quick glance at other reviews should be self-explanatory. No vision, no transparency, not even an understanding of the products that made the company great in its heydays at the management level.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. In our 23 years, we've evolved from being a software company to an ecosystem company to now adding a platform vision. We appreciate change is difficult. That said, it is change that has helped NI become the company it is today.

Exponential curve downwards

Pros

- The (operation level) people - they do a pretty good job of hiring at this level, the people who do all the meaningful work; people with passion, skills, appreciation, good spirits, and honest personalities. - Self-managed teams - In my case, were very flexible with working schedule; that was extremely important for me. I like the location too, but that's totally subjective.

Cons

The cons heavily outweigh the pros unfortunately. Almost everyone in middle management and upwards seem quite apathetic or have just lost the understanding of what made NI work well in the past and what they're capable of doing in the present (which would be a LOT, if they were able to focus more towards modern products and motivated teams). - No vision for innovative technology anymore - No real investment in modernizing their most popular and grossing platforms - Confused, self-conflicting management, that leads to... - Endless shifting of goals and moving targets = extremely inefficient workforce - No raises, outside following minimum inflation, til the day you leave. - No bonuses - Unfulfilled promises of transparency (for at least 5 years now) - Motivational speeches made every quarter about the riches the company will make and the growth we will see, which usually translates to: more work nobody wants to do because of the reasons mentioned above, and no one but "the company" will actually get any richer.

We really appreciate your taking the time for writing this constructive advice to Senior Management. We currently are working to evolve all of the topics you have outlined, e.g. future proofing our current platform, and understanding our users so we can build improved user-centric products. We have also recently started company-wide Q&A with our exec team to address employees' questions in an aim to demonstrate greater transparency in the business.

Uncertain decisions of the management

Pros

Great team to work with. Colleagues always helping and teaching.

Cons

Uncertain decisions of the management, 100 people fired in one day, people laid off after one-month working (better not hiring next time guys), new management not related to the music world (no producers, musicians or DJs, just business), unclear communication and people avoiding questions.

Incompetence to the fullest

Pros

great colleagues and teamwork within my team, nice working environment incl. community space, free snacks and beverages

Cons

no learnings from team surveys the executives don't seem to know what they're doing. they are always talking about "team empowerment" and "transparency" but the opposite is the case. toxic work culture. the company "strategy" has been changed from one day to the other and more than 100 people had to go. a workers council doesn't exist unfortunately. it seems that the company is run by the investors.

A disappointing experience I'm glad I had

Pros

Modern offices with some nice perks like free beer on Fridays and good coffee, etc. A lot of the people I worked with on a daily basis were very friendly and it's great to be surrounded by people who really love music.

Cons

The whole time I was working there, the teams I worked with didn't release anything innovative or particularly exciting. This is because upper management were micro managing our backlog and forcing us to build whatever feature they had dreamt up that morning, a feature that had no connection what so ever to anything our users were asking for. By being completely out of touch with the entire actual user base, they managed to squander the largest amount of capital that had ever been invested into the music tech industry, and have absolutely nothing to show for it.
