Management in histology. Unreasonable PTO policy outside of company policy specific to histology alone. Basically, you have all these days of PTO, and company holidays, but no way to access them easily unless you plan 3-6 months in advance. With imaging, lab assistants, and technologists all included as one "department" they only allow 2 people off per shift, during weekdays for the whole department. Never mind that none of these job classifications are allowed to do each other's jobs. That number drops to one person per shift on weekends.
So as you can imagine, with 50+ people per shift, time off fills up months in advance. Training is abysmal. I was hired with 5 years of experience, from microtomy, slide QC, IHC, special stains, grossing, and in 6 months had been signed off on microtomy alone. I wasn't scheduled to be signed off/allowed to do anything else for another 4-5 months.
You will be bored. You will do the same thing, no matter your experience or what they promise you. I was told I'd be on microtomy for 1 month. It stretched to 4+ months of nothing but cutting slides 8 hours a day, every single day. With Memorial Day coming up, as most people are scheduled Tuesday to Saturday, we were told to not assume we have the day off (a Monday), unless enough volunteers sign up. Company policy for those of us with Mondays off is you are supposed to get Tuesday off, since Monday-Friday employees would get a 3 day weekend, but since we work Saturdays and already have the Monday off, we wouldn't. Management completely disregards this and pushes employees to sign up, under threats of "if we don't get enough, we will just start assigning shifts." So much for all those generous company holidays they enticed you with to accept that job offer.
But hey, at least during lab week they provide breakfast once, and a couple of lunches. The breakroom has, wait for it, free coffee!! Everything else you can buy, they do not provide any breakfast or snacks as an ongoing employee benefit as other companies in this area of their size.
