Pros

- If in a "lucky" department you will find colleagues who want the best for the railway, share knowledge and help each other. - Before the pandemic most jobs were secure - pay is reasonably good (depending on the department you work in) with good working hours.

Cons

- very much likely to come across narrow minded people, you find a lot of -ist!!! if you are NOT a White middle age male then good luck. - The company does not take seriously any -ist issues and would brush it under the carpet (they protect senior managers more than all colleagues, even if the senior managers have been "officially" proven wrong/guilty). [Network Rail has been taken to court on several occasions due to all the different type of "-ist" problems caused by senior managers - all the cases can be found online on the government website] - Very difficult to change the culture of this organisation!

Its ok for some but I find it toxic

Pros

Job security and a decent pension

Cons

I started as part of a team in the Shared Service centre there, and it was pretty much a toxic team where I was subjected to sexisim from my co-workers every day. Having an uninterested line manager whom played favourites did not help. I ended up getting a secondment and a payrise, with a less toxic team, buit there are problems, such as an invoicing and billing system that was built a decade ago, does not lend itself to any level of manual input or correction, the processes are long and complicated. That and the fact the team is new and the predecessors left without completing any handover, and the resulting lack of knowledge has led to a high turnover of staff, and its especially worrying when your team leaders either leave or go off on long term sick leave, and there stand in is rude, condescending and abrasive, with little knowledge or interest in the issues that the team faces.

Pros

Great inclusive culture, lots of experienced people and development opportunities if you want it. Good amount of leave with option to buy and sell. Agile working and they do look their employees.

Cons

Paid every 4 weeks, so 13 times per year which makes you feel worse off. Difficult to know who are the decision makers in some areas as the organisation is so big. Standards you are supposed to work to can be ambiguous and overly complex in wording. Onboarding was below par and HR processes can make it difficult to get rid of trouble makers and lazy people that take advantage of the system.
