Pros

1. Company supports pursuit of role relevant certifications and continued knowledge building. 2. Quarterly bonuses (for senior salaried positions). 3. Yearly raises have been good (are merit-based via self and peer review). 4. Opportunities for travel to meet clients face to face and build strong work relationships. 5. Company is steadily landing significant players as clients. 6. Those with a tendency for personal responsibility and a good work ethic do well. 7. Reasonably flexible about working from home. 8. Lots of great people to work with! 9. Nerf wars. 10. Lunch room and lounge room are quite nice. 11. Large windows let in plenty of light. 12. If you have the time to drive, lots of good food options in Wayzata and surrounding suburbs. 13. The random wild turkey and deer invasions in the warmer months.

Cons

1. Parking (when large reviews in house are in progress). 2. Departments do not have their own budgets. This has led to a perceived flow of funds away from tech infrastructure/upgrades to furnishing/decorating and re-furnishing the office. The place looks nice, but new purchases beg the question “Is that necessary?” 3. Work and Life balance is disproportionate when it comes to certain roles. This has led to burn out and visibly stressed personnel. 4. Internal communication between departments is severely lacking. 5. Communication from the top about the company’s future plans, goals, benchmarks, stability, financial health, or anything else is abysmal (ie: nonexistent). 6. Voiced concerns are met with any or all of the following: a shrug, defensive rug sweeping, promises to investigate/improve with little to no results or follow up. 7. New software is rolled out with the bare minimum testing and planning, leaving issues and bugs to be discovered in the midst a busy work day. 8. No 401k despite many years of being promised that “it is coming”. Common excuse is that it is complicated. While I do not dispute the complexity, the passage of time renders this excuse as inconsequential.

Dear Concerned Employee: Thank you for your feedback. It is helpful. To clarify some of your comments and perhaps offer opportunities for greater involvement: 1. NightOwl does have a formal budgeting process. The process spans weeks of planning in the early fall each year. This process culminates in a week long teams based strategic planning session. If you would like to participate in this process, please let your director know about your desire. Engaged parties are always welcome 2. NightOwl moved about a year ago after 24 years. The new facility has been a welcome opportunity to roll out new collaboration technologies and improved workstations in the new environment. These additions are not part of NightOwl’s operating budget and do not impact any budget internal to the company. They are meant to improve engagement and opportunity to collaborate with co-workers and improve employee experience. 3. New technology deployments at NightOwl are taken very seriously and go through an arduous and expensive sandboxing process. This process relates to all new technology, and all technology upgrades. That being said, technology can have bugs, and sometimes bugs need to be worked out. If you would like to be more involved in this process, please reach out to your direct manager. 4. Teams can get overloaded. If you sense that co-workers are stressed or new assets are required to make your team run more smoothly and prevent fatigue, please reach out to your director. Executive management needs to know about team fatigue and resource scarcity. The company is growing fast and planning for new hires is important. 5. The desire for a 401k has been heard. Offering a 401k requires a certain level of participation from the company employees. In the past we had a plan, however, there was not enough interest in participation to keep it in place when markets became volatile. Currently, based on recent polling the interest has returned. Do know that it requires participation from a significant number of employees or the plan cannot meet the necessary threshold requirements. We hope to have a plan rolled out for 2018. This is something desired by all, including upper management. We are a quickly growing company and take what we do very seriously. There is ample room to grow and get involved if you are interested and engaged. Your comments are meaningful and it seems you are an engaged employee. We would like to see someone like you reach out for a more significant engagement with company leadership.

La Familia NightOwl

Pros

I was adopted by my NightOwl family over 10 years ago. I am one of a number of "strays" that came to NightOwl at the time when executive management was beginning to face the challenge of the changing litigation industry. Several of our competitors began to shut down operations, and turn off the lights. The litigation industry in this town is relatively small. We all personally knew people who had lost their jobs due to these times, and they had families to feed and support. Time for a new career? Really? I never worried that our company would do anything but succeed. The attitude of this organization was such that we all knew good things were coming along. Through developed mutual trust, there was this real sense of loyalty between the teams and executive management. We grew. And then we kept growing. To this day, and because of this loyalty and trust, we have retained an amazing group of people who have become family. And our family continues to grow. There is no bigger PRO to me than this… Earn it, become a part of this very cool ride.

Cons

Could we bring back the fresh fruit we used to have around here or there? That was a great thing to have for me.
