Pros

There's not much that has occurred in the past 3 years that I would consider a pro.

Cons

Students are now performing worse than CPS, both in SAT scores and college persistence. There is no accountability and academics have taken a backseat to SEL. 50% grade floor means students only have to do 10% to pass. Teachers are expected to do everything with very little focus on their actual job: teaching. Behaviors are horrendous. I had a student smoke a vape in my class and they were returned before the end of the period. Many of my students, if not a majority, simply talk over me the entire period. You will be told this is your fault for not building relationships or having the classroom norms posted.

Pros

Committed teachers, meaningful work, curricular freedom

Cons

Structures fail to provide incentives and accountability for students, whose engagement has sharply declined in the time since the pandemic. Teachers are still expected to drive high rates of academic growth while being hamstrung by policy at every turn and provided insufficient prep time.

Bloated, Rudderless Leadership

Pros

Kids and families are great and many colleagues are smart and talented.

Cons

The average admin to student ratio in Illinois 1:157. I work at a school with around 650 students and 10 people with Dean or Principal in their title, not withstanding the network bureaucrats. You can do the math. With nearly 3 times as many administrators we should have excellent student and teacher support but instead admin just plays pass the buck with every issue and concern. Promotions are rooted in nepotism and cliquishness. There is a stated culture of welcoming feedback but in practice this means only that teachers must be open to feedback whereas leaders can hear it selectively. Leadership rolled out massive (and well intentioned and necessary) changes this year but dropped the ball on execution.
