Women Beware!

Pros

- Smart, caring employees - New, interesting technology - Flexibility to work in multiple roles - Small community groups are getting more traction

Cons

- Despite a recent focus on hiring more women, the numbers keep dropping. I’ll admit that some orgs are better than others, but the one I worked in (5+ years) has minimal female and minority representation across leadership. The director-level alone has 12 people: 11 men and 1 woman. - As a woman in technology, I knew I would experience some level of misogyny in the workplace. My last year at Nordstrom was terrible. When I brought up concerns to management (grossly inappropriate comments about my body, blatant lack of respect, etc.), I was given excuses and told to ignore, move on. - Senior leadership is a joke. There is no accountability, ownership, empathy, or diversity. - The open, fun, compassionate culture I once knew has shifted entirely. While there are still great people who work there, many of them had left by the time I finally resigned.

Horrible

Pros

Degrees of freedom are high (although that is a double edged sword). Generally good people to work with at the engineering level.

Cons

Senior leadership is not aligned and talks out of both sides of their mouth. There are no standards or accountability for anyone.

Hello, Thank you for your candid feedback. My name is Patrick Welch, and I’m the Vice President of Technology at Nordstrom. I appreciate your sharing this issue of accountability with us, especially as we continue our work streamlining our processes across teams. This begins with the way our leadership upholds Nordstrom’s commitment to giving employees ownership over their work in a dynamic environment, and I apologize if we've missed the mark so far during your time with us. As we work to implement changes, it would be very helpful to hear more details about your experience so that we can resolve these issues and learn where we can go from here. If you have the time, please send me a personal message at NordTechFeedback@nordstrom.com with any further input you can provide. Sincerely, Patrick Welch VP Technology Nordstrom

Broken Leadership

Business Outlook

Pros

A solid group of engineers capable of delivering results. Line managers who want to have an impact. Good work life balance. Merchandise discount.

Cons

Senior management is mess. The leadership team is incapable of leading and unable to define a cohesive strategy and even less capable of execution. Politics plays large and individual success depends heavily on personal and professional alliances. Leaders manage mostly up and do very little else in part I suspect because they don't know how to do their jobs. Finger pointing and shifting blame is commonplace without accountability for VP especially and even SVP leaders. Attrition is off the charts and points back to the top as the direct cause. That's why I left and won't be back, ever.
