Pros

The only positive things about Nordstrom IT is the retail discount and the friends you can make if you are on a team with good people.

Cons

Up until a few years ago, one of the best things about Nordstrom IT was the culture and the opportunities. All of that was destroyed when the CIO was replaced by a finance guy Dan Little with no technical expertise or interest. Dan retired in September and has yet to be replaced from what I hear. Dan brought together a team of vile upper management people that came up with an idiotic foolish management initiative called T.O.M. Constant reorgs, lack of vision and direction, poisonous envy of predatory cultures like at Microsoft and Amazon, no stability in the teams due to layoff after layoff has annihilated the culture and the other good things about working there. Anyone that has been there for a few years is constantly looking over their shoulders wondering if they are next to lose their jobs. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

Hello, Thank you for your candid feedback. My name is Patrick Welch, and I’m the Vice President of Technology at Nordstrom. I appreciate your sharing these issues with us, especially as we continue our work streamlining our processes across teams. This begins with the way our managers uphold Nordstrom’s unified vision, culture, and commitment to giving employees ownership over their work. I want to apologize if we missed the mark during your time with us. As we work to improve, it would be very helpful to hear more details about your experience so that we can resolve this issue and learn where we can go from here. If you have the time, please send me a personal message at NordTechFeedback@nordstrom.com with any further input you can provide. Sincerely, Patrick Welch VP Technology Nordstrom

Pros

Work life balance (truly -- this is a great place to coast along if you have a lot of outside of work engagements) Great discount

Cons

Nordstrom needs to re-envision their culture. The place runs on petty politics and backstabbing even at the bottom IC level. Their rule, "Use good judgement" has morphed into "Be judgemental", and as such it's normal for teams and managers to smack talk other people within the company. As an engineer, the last thing I want to deal with is politics and hateful gossip, but at Nordstrom, it's unavoidable. There's lots of opportunities for technical innovation, but I've witnessed first hand to the engineers which innovate. Other teams trash talk their solution and may even try and steal credit for it while senior leadership has no idea what is going on. Leadership remains out of touch due to constant churn. Almost all of the quality employees in technology leave within 2 years to better opportunities (this is Seattle after all). Stay away from this place unless you want to be lazy or try out a new job which you aren't really qualified for (the interviews are a joke).

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience here. Though I’m glad to hear that you saw room for innovation during your time working with us, I can understand your frustration in terms of execution. As a company, we are fortunate to have attracted some of the best talent in the industry, but it is the management of our many diverse skill sets that determines our future. With that in mind, I want to apologize if we fell short during your time with us. I encourage you to reach out to me directly at NordTechFeedback@nordstrom.com if you have the time to share any additional feedback, and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Sincerely, Patrick Welch VP Technology Nordstrom

Pros

For the most part, they hire young people in their 20's to be a "stylist", and so you'll meet a lot of other young fun people with similar interests which is great. The fun part is getting to know your clients, and having your local clients come in to have shopping appointments. Really the only styling aspect of the job.

Cons

To sum this up as best as possible, you are a glorified telemarketer labeled as a "stylist". There is no fashion experience prerequisite to land the job and you sit at your desk making call after call to get people to go through with the service. Training is a joke and does not by any means provide you with any useful knowledge needed for the job. Once you're done with training, the company does not set realistic sales goals for you to start, so if you do not have a wide network of people willing to spend $175 (minimum) on a single pair of jeans, good luck. Even if you work over time, are a good fit within the company, grow your sales month over month, pitch in the help whenever you can... if you don't sell what they set as their standard (30K) in a single month TO THE PENNY, then they just don't have time for you. They don't have a policy in place for paid time off, because they want to seem like a hip, fun company with a great culture, yet you'll receive emails from multiple people in various upper management roles going on and on about how you shouldn't take time off during the holidays to be with your family and instead be spending your time working. Not exactly the "culture" I would like to surround myself with everyday. They've grown very much, and it's not a surprise because the job seems very glamourous...they have young people coming in to work as a "stylist", getting paid VERY little, just to be let go in a matter of months...so they have tons of people applying and working for their company to make the sales, but spit them out 6 months later. The turnover is outrageous - yes every sales job has turnover but considering about 50 of the 80 stylists that were there when I started were no longer with the company by the time I left... come on.
