Pros

There is 401K, and steady pay.

Cons

At the time of my employment, there was hardly enough staff coverage during day shifts. We were actually would have 2-3 associates(1 cashier, 1 sales, 1 manager) in the store when it's lunch time, which is the busiest time of the day. So we would have customers who need help waiting. These wait times can be so long that the customer would drop what they have in hand and leave the store. From what I hear from more experienced coworkers that this happens in all the other Office Depots in the area. All this of course didn't help out the sales numbers if we can't sale. I worked at one of the stores in the worse districts. So we would always get (putting it nicely) nagged about to bring up the sales numbers, to the point where we would annoy and even anger some customers about buying add on items with big purchases. (e.g. ink, paper and cables with a printer) And when I try to mention these issues affecting our customer service, my manager would literally roll their eyes.

Pros

Corporate HQ is a mere five minutes from the beach and the weather is great ten months out of the year. There is an amazing cafeteria located on the campus with a wide variety of food to choose from. Half of the employees are solid people to know in and out of the work environment and I personally made many good friends in my time with the company.

Cons

If you desire a career, stay away from Office Depot. The systems are completely outdated and don't have the technology to effectively run a Fortune 500 company. Each department is poorly run due to lack of communication and resources, no one knows what anyone else is doing. Four VP's will make five different plans for a rollout of product or end of quarter strategy. Each dept. is given poorly developed goals that when strived for end up conflicting with other departments causing each group to not help the other for fear they will hurt their own numbers. Afterwards, the executive team gets together for their quarterly "blamestorming" session where they fix blame on a dept. for missing their arbitrary, baseless numbers then fire that manager. New quarter begins, rinse and repeat. Because of this there is a lot of cloak and dagger operation among the professionals. One dept. may have the resources to help another but won't. Management from that dept. will watch the other fail and then step in afterwards with an "improvement" plan in order to come off as the new guy who can turn things around. Can you work your way up in this environment? Yes. But would you want to?
