It was a great place to work

Pros

You gain great experience, work from home, editors are generally appreciated by readers and community members

Cons

it was a lot of work, various requirements that sometimes seemed pointless, being on call at all hours for breaking news in your area, difficult platform to post stories littered with technical bugs

Pros

Busy, busy, busy if that's what you like. Potential to learn many things because you're a jack-of-all-trades in the media company.

Cons

Expect at least 60 hours per week, making between $30K and $40K per year. Expect the company to come down with random and ill-thought out directives at least once a month. Expect the company to suddenly change policies while telling you things have "always been that way" and nothing's changing. Expect the company to tell you everything is fine and dandy though rumors are swirling about layoffs. Then expect layoffs the following week.

What a ride

Pros

-Excellent way to kick off my journalism career -Had nearly full control over a hyperlocal website, building an engaged audience that really relied on my work. -Great team of local colleagues that communicated with each other often.

Cons

-Disconnect with HQ led to decisions and edicts that did not improve website quality. -Company would often expense large sums of money without having a stable way of making it back. -Local Editor would often be the sole journalist/copyeditor/chief marketer with no freelance help.
