Pros
Employees are often united in the cause of helping kids. Atmosphere is not your typical hospital and is upbeat and bright. Food is served through the day at a cafeteria or the coffee shop. Retail pharmacy with employee discounts if you use them. Good benefits, for medical.
Cons
No movement once you are in due to high external hiring and buddy hiring practices. High school environment with nursing staff (which includes the physicians) with a cut-throat attitude and lots of bad mouthing each other. I get to see and hear lots as IT (they chatter on and ignore you when you are busy fixing something for them), and the gossiping is nasty. Not much different from other health care places however. High stress! You will not move up easily. VP's and Supers are chosen from outside, managers hired as favors for someone's friend or family members. Atmosphere is highly political. You will be treated poorly by most doctors and residents as many of them are treated like celebrities. Do not bother complaining to HR. Your manager will be informed, whether you want to be confidential or not. I have yet to see someone in my section able to successfully utilize half the benefits claimed to be available. Favorites of managers get those types of benefits. There is no PTO exchange system where people can donate PTO directly to a coworker they feel needs it. You will watch many whither, suffer, and have to quit, especially if they have a family. There are no paid FMLA days, vacation, sick leave, and only 3 days of berevement. "100% for Children", unless they are yours. Sexual harrassment is on the rise in IT. If you are not he type to put out or flirt, you will not be liked as much as those who do. You will also spend lots of time picking up where they leave off, male or female, while in IT, because they are not there for their abilities. Majority of VPs are business suits, having their degrees in irrelevant fields but, as said, hired because they are someone's friend or family. The bottom line is still king in this "non-profit" company. If you do not give every month to different charity runs, you will be made to seem like a stick in the mud or a bad-meaning person. Managers and Supers will make triple figures while you wait for that next paycheck, VPs an unknown amount where they can buy the latest gadgets and trinkets without a thought.
