Pros

The properties are only open during the day, so there is no second or third shift issues. The technology is always leading edge and the ability to pull reports to check current status is amazing.

Cons

You are completely micro-managed. The number of assigned tasks continues to grow and become more and more difficult to accomplish and takes you away from developing your people. When certain goals are not achieved the management style shifts to a bully style management approach and is very uncomfortable.

Pros

The salary is very good. Bonuses are great if they don't fire you before you can collect.

Cons

This is a temporary job. There is a 90% turn on the DM position. Public Storage constantly hires "Bench District Managers" to learn the job of a DM and then take over when one is fired. Within 2 years I watched over 20 District Managers get fired for no reason. You will sign an agreement that you agree you can be terminated for no reason at any time. Taking a job with PS will ruin your resume because it will show a short length of time and it is bottom barrel multi level management working for a storage company. Do not let the one year of a good salary tempt you. Public Storage has a "No references allowed" policy, so do not expect a reference upon your departure. Regional Vice Presidents do not want anyone good to stand out and possibly take their job, so they fire you. Even if you are one of the very top performers in consecutive quarters - you will be fired. #1 They don't want to give out raises and bonuses to those doing so well and there are 3 or 4 fully trained "Bench DM's" waiting for placement. #2 The Regionals do not want a DM to outshine them. #3 It's difficult to build a team of successful YOY Property Managers because Public Storage does not promote Property Managers. As a DM you will have to find and hire people that are ok with being paid $9.50 per hour with zero chance of advancement.

Pros

Pay for DM’s was good over the years. If you started in the early days and managed money well, you are in great shape. In addition, there were some great leaders to learn from....oh wait, they usually get fired once the CEO hears them say one thing he doesn’t agree with. This is NOT an opinion nor isolated to one instance. Anyways, thanks to those great leaders who provided a wealth of knowledge!

Cons

As a previous DM and RVP with this company, please do not fall in to this trap. The stock grants were so good in the past that it used to make misery worth it, but now the measly 12 share per year vest is simply not worth the stress. Also, ethics and integrity are out the window here. If you are over 40 with tons of multi unit experience, you need not apply. Hiring managers are coached to label you as “ downside of career” which is their way of saying “too old.” Perhaps the EEOC should be alerted to these practices? Also, they realize that you are most likely too smart to put up with the craziness. Instead, they like to hire young, give them a life changing salary and wait for them to burn out. They will just get more when they need to. If you hate taking care of customers, this is the place for you because you don’t have the authority to do so. Try explaining to customers why PS (billion dollar company)has not replaced a 30 yr old roof that is supposed to protect their belongings. Or why a brand new building has mold because the company didn’t want to pay for dehumidifiers . Please pay close attention to the great reviews from the RVP’s and DM’s . Look at the dates when they come in. Funny that they come in around the same days??? It is a directive from above to try and increase ratings and they are simply not true. If you do come here, hope for a great leader that can filter the corp direction well. Also, don’t be fooled by a DM title. You are in control of very little. Think “high paid baby sitter.” Your turnover will be high unless you have the cash to incentivize your team out of your own pocket. Some great people along the way, but some really horrible people as well.
