Pros

Stores are physically not open past 6pm. That helps with less issues with customers past office hours. If you get a great Regional, then you will get more out of this position. Peers 8 out of 10 are good people. Pay is competitive for a big box store salary.

Cons

this company has analysis paralysis. There are literally 17 reports to run daily. To send to someone. You need to do things so you don't show up on someone's report somewhere. They will work on your pay plan the year of the pay plan. they work on objectives the year those objectives are for. There is no planning from regional manager and above. They overload you on pencil pushing thing to do instead of value time spent with your people to develop them. Each of the systems are built to take 5 extra steps to do one thing. You cannot approve repairs past 100 dollars. They also coddle veterans that are chronic underperformers. Corporate employees and some regional and above are there to catch what you're doing wrong yet not offer solutions to fix it. There is no real "time off" on the weekends . They have so many unwritten rules on how to answer an email or a question or a phone call. Have more transparency with your people!

Pros

Will make you appreciate former companies and future companies more. Really there are no pros.

Cons

No respect, no support, micromanagement and business model that should be simple is made complicated. Upper management believes in pain management they inflict pain to change behaviors. They want you to inflict pain on the property managers to the change behavior. Upper management sees no value in property managers and will not promote them. District managers are seen as a means to an end and turnover so quickly. No work life balance, total lack of ethics, corporate HR pushes new employees to write reviews to increase glassdoor average. DMs don't get fired we quit in droves. Don't work for Public Storage if you do you will regret it within 90 days.

Pros

The job itself is easy. Some of the customers are fantastic people.

Cons

Name it. Everything is wrong with this company. I was there for 4 years. When I started with the company I received a monthly bonus. Then it was a quarterly bonus. Then they changed it to a yearly bonus that was impossible to get. I made less money every year I worked there. We didn't even get a cost of living raise in 2013. We were driven like donkeys to meet upper managements goals so they would bonus. Management was constantly in our faces about Google reviews. People were writing fake reviews to get them off their backs which was grounds for termination. Management had non customers write reviews so they would bonus. Nothing got fixed. Security cameras were out and wouldn't be fixed. The gate would allow anyone to enter using any number at any time. They wouldn't fix it. I had to lie to customers about everything. We were forced to harass non paying customers with repeated phone calls. There was a gas leak from one of the heaters, They wouldn't call for repair service. There was black mold in the office and utility closet that was making me sick. I was told to purchase bleach with my own money (we were not allowed to order it),and scrub it off the wall. I was told to never mention it again. We were forced to falsify the monthly checklist (grounds for termination) only to have the auditor call us out on it. This company doesn't care about employees or customers. It's all about upper management making their bonuses. Bonuses most of them do not deserve.

Public Storage Response

Thank you for your comments. We welcome and encourage feedback from both current and former employees as it helps improve our organization. We are committed to ensuring that we attract, develop and retain the best talent which requires a comprehensive and competitive compensation and benefits package. Property personnel receive annual increases which are competitive within the storage and retail marketplace. We do occasionally change our bonus plan to ensure that we continue to encourage and reward performance excellence. We encourage customers to share their storage experience on multiple social media sites to help others in a similar situation make better-informed decisions. It is not our company policy to write reviews on behalf of our customers or request reviews from non-customers. We invest a significant amount of resources each year to ensure all of our locations are clean and well-maintained. In fact, we have an entire team dedicated to meeting and exceeding the high expectations of our customers and the standards that have made us the industry leader. Thank you for taking the time to review Public Storage. We sincerely wish you the best in your career.
