Lacking in Direction and Leadership

Pros

Certain individual contributors work hard to keep things afloat despite larger organizational dysfunction.

Cons

Direction and priorities often shift with little notice, creating a reactive environment where planning and execution suffer. There is minimal structural clarity. Teams operate in silos without clear handoffs, responsibilities, or alignment, leading to duplicated work and miscommunication. Tech teams often looped in late, with limited visibility into the broader context or business rationale. This detachment makes it difficult to contribute meaningfully and leads to unnecessary rework. Decision-making appears to be influenced more by internal politics than by consistent goals or objectives. The company lacks a cohesive identity. Without a clear culture or values, it’s difficult for employees to feel anchored or motivated. Burnout is common across departments due to unclear expectations, shifting priorities, and minimal support from leadership. The senior leadership culture comes off opaque, with minimal transparency or trust-building practices in place.

Pros

- depending on the team, there are largely friendly and encourage coffee breaks or lunches to build collaboration among the team. - easy to schedule small meetings with engineers to design and delegate tasks amongst engineers if working on the same project - JIRA integration largely increased productivity among teams, managers, team leads, PMs - prior to COVID and everyone going remote, department team building activities were encouraged following Town Halls, IT All Hands. - find an upper management / senior or team lead early on as they are usually very beneficial and more than happy to mentor and provide advice regarding aspects and how achieve your personal career goals. - security is very helpful and attentive should you have a safety concern,

Cons

- poor cross-team collaboration; if we had a better overall team moral, less negative gossip spread about other teams to each other, listened and *valued* everyone's opinions and expertise—I strongly believe (and have heard the same from many other colleagues—we could drastically improve productivity, practices and processes, workflows, as well as the identification of technical issues and best solutions forward. - lack of efficient project management to reach quarterly & yearly roadmap goals - very high expectation of all engineers, pushed to burnout levels, and with not much regard to improve team moral, productivity, enjoyment day-to-day - upper management less concerned with individual engineer career goals; very difficult to receive internal promotions or raises, and move/apply to other positions cross-teams better fitted for long-term career goals. - expected to work 60-70+ weeks and highly pressured to constantly work after hours, on call, on the weekends, during scheduled time off, or during illness - it's common to hear execs say you will be pushed to work endlessly unless you fervently push back, despite illness, family or personal emergencies, scheduled PTO or regular "holidays".

Pros

-You get to work with some amazing people -Opportunity to learn the banking/fintech industry -Very easy to get a job in support, even if you have zero technical background -The company handled the COVID pandemic very effectively This place can be a decent place to start out if you’re changing careers, but it will not be easy. In support, you will learn to develop top-notch customer service skills as anything less will not be accepted.

Cons

-Worked to the bone -Underappreciated -Bloated work force (especially in management) -Weak 401k matching No matter what you do in support, it will not be enough. The hardest workers are repaid with more work thrown on their plates. The lazy, dead weight will be rewarded by not having more work pushed on them and are constantly being bailed out by the better workers. Those who shout the loudest get the furthest. If you like to keep your head down and get things done, you will not go anywhere here. If you love spouting off random nonsense in meetings just for the sake of being heard, then this is the place for you. Even if you’ve been a good worker for years, you will not be paid a penny more than brand new people starting as call takers. It is a well known fact that newer people typically make a bit more than people who have been around 6+ months due to inflation. However, the existing workers are never paid that difference. Management has no technical aptitude whatsoever, and will simply tell you to “get things done.” There are some good managers in support, but most really just don’t care. Even the good ones simply just do whatever the directors tell them to do, so they aren’t really effective.
