My biggest peeve is there is no teleworking policy on the books. Although collaboration is vital to the success of many an endeavor, these days this can be accomplished virtually. One would think with QTS being a technology -based company, that this would be known, or considered. Recently a major highway was set aflame causing it to be shut down, in a city that has the EIGHTH worst traffic in the WORLD. An e-mail was distributed acknowledging the tragedy but basically just suggested employees carpool or leave earlier. WHAT?! I was disappointed that not a word was mentioned giving managers authority to allow themselves and employees to make better arrangements. Over the fall and winter months, several employees were coughing, hacking, and sniffling around the office space. Wouldn't happen if there was a telecommuting policy. Some of their buildings have one egress/entry point, and no windows. It is easy to feel the cabin fever by weeks' end. Recently, additional office space was purchased by QTS. Personally, I would have happily saved the company some $$ by volunteering my cube space in exchange for working 100% remotely, or even for cube sharing.
QTS loves volunteerism, and volunteering is a good thing. However, it's a bad thing, and unfair when one cannot be nominated for, or awarded for excellence if they have no volunteer hours logged. QTS provides opportunities to volunteer at events during the work day, and you are compensated for the time, but what about the work? You know, what you were truly hired for...? If you participate in a volunteering event, your work still must get done. For some, this makes for a long day. Many employees spend two or more hours a day commuting to and from work, who also have family obligations. Now add volunteerism to that...a bit much, in my opinion. However, I am glad, that volunteering on weekends is now included and considered. Bottom line though, is that volunteering is a personal choice and should not detract from one's excellence as a QTS employee.
