The once and former great REI!

Pros

Great people, good pro-deals on product.

Cons

REI has become a stressful, when is the next shoe going to fall environment. Many restructuring and re-orgs have become the norm. and seems to be long term employees who are targeted. Let me be clear, these were highly productive, well liked and respected employees but not valued by the new management. The culture and values are shadow of what they once were, pay more for benefits while they are reduced. Sabbaticals have been reduced and most likely going to be a thing of the past in the next couple of years.

Pros

WFH is nice. Nobody expects you ever complete a project, because it isn’t cultural at REI to be innovative, driven, or hard charging. As long as you smile and use your pronouns, it’s an easy low 6 figures.

Cons

REI’s leadership is known to largely be incompetent. Most of them are sadly disrespected by the company; but insulated by the like minded yes-people they surround themselves with of common sentiment. They are driving the company into the dirt, and despite not having made a single cent in 3 or so years, somehow they continue to stay the course. Their lack of independent thinking, failures stemming from emotional feel-good decisions, and continuation of failed policies, are putting a critical strain on business, morale, and this brand.

Pros

Remote work from home life works well with this company and the people they do hire. The pay is average for IT and the benefits are great and competitive for the most part. Time off is also average but also understanding of life situations. My co workers might be my favorite part of the job. Love working with them! I love the culture and I love the outdoors and almost everyone that works here does too. Most of the employees come here because they share the same love for something outside!

Cons

Leadership has begun making some really really awful mistakes and they aren’t slowing down. More layoffs after 2 already last year and the promise of more coming in the next two years in the IT world. They likely won’t be hiring anytime soon and if they are, don’t bother. You might just get let go. Leadership is focusing more on money and less on its people, it’s full time employees who are invested in keeping REI a wonderful place to be. Leadership is reducing full time employee workforce in the IT department by 50% over the next two years and keeping contract forces the same or greater. In other words, hiring and playing less for developers who aren’t as invested in the company for its values. REI is no longer the place it used to be to work for. The people are still making it great but they are slowly dwindling and being let go. This is no way to run a company that was respected for its values. Something in leadership needs to change fast.
