Good and Bad

Pros

You will work with like minded people who are driven and fun. The people I work with are the best part. Prodeals are also a major benefit. It is a wonderful retail job where in general the customers are kind.

Cons

Atypical scheduling means no routine and you have to work weekends. I feel the pay is also based on merit not on performance or tenure. Staffing levels never feel quite appropriate. Membership is also their only actual numerical performance indicator. The Coop structure is shifting more towards a rewards program. members do not have a large say in company whatsoever. Sick time and vacation time accrual is slow. As a full time employee you must work 2 months to earn 1 full sick day. Anti union company that doesn't listen to employees or it takes months to get what is needed. Company policy is hard to find or managers will give you different information.

Corporate Greed

Pros

The pros are the discounts and the pay. Not many retailers will pay their employees enough to afford their products, but REI is not like most retailers. Outside of that, it has turned into another big sellout retailer that disguises their greed behind a co-op.

Cons

The downside from a regular part-time perspective is that your hours are not guaranteed, you are subjected to having your hours cut if you do not sell memberships, your metrics are monitored and if they are low, you will be entitled to coaching. Usually, metrics would not be an issue as this expectation is supposed to be met, but it is undoubtedly a problem when your CEO constantly goes out of their way to make it seem as if REI is the gold standard on how to treat your staff.

Getting worse

Pros

Pay, benefits, and discounts are some of the best in retail. , Rei has some of the best customers around, and REI used to have some of the best training around,. Wonderful group of people in many of the stores.

Cons

A massive culture of favoritism makes it, so some of the best performers in the store get overlooked. Hours can be severely cut without any notice. There are times when it seems like REI's diversity efforts are all for show. Stores can have a toxic environment depending on management.
