Very low staff morale, sinking ship

Pros

Attracts talented and collegial staff from all around the world. Very international work culture.

Cons

Leadership is insular and arrogant. Dissent/disagreement with leadership team not tolerated. There is a sense among staff that leadership has no coherent strategy and is leading the organization into financial peril. Staff ideas are not listened to. Many redundancies recently (staff who express disagreement are fired).

Sinking Ship

Pros

Impressive track record of innovative solutions to thorny environmental problems and good work in the field; nice benefits

Cons

In financial distress; significant layoffs for second year in a row (10+% of staff each year); weak leadership; outsized overheads; systemic budget issues ignored by Board year after year; new President spends most of his time jetting around globe--talks vision and tweets but no management apparent; no CF0 for over a year; budgeting by magical thinking and bullying.

If wishing made it so ...

Pros

Great mission, there are some incredibly dedicated people working at RA who bring a passion that is frankly unparalleled. Depending on your business unit, you can find incredibly competent managers who want to see you succeed in your career. Really beautiful office in NYC as well as opportunities to potentially work in VT, D.C., and Minnesota.

Cons

Alas the cons very much outweigh the pros. Senior management is incompetent and highly political. There is some intense infighting at the top which trickles down in the worst way. Basically in the Summer of 2015 the entire senior management of F&A quit following the departure of the CFO in the Spring. There is supposed to be new blood coming in, but there are stalwarts there that have an axe to grind and are likely to grind it. Do not expect to be able to climb the ranks, only a few have done so. I would recommend waiting until the dust settles and a new President is in place. There are much needed changes in how the organization operates and their business model, and those I do hope are forthcoming.
