Nice Company, Nice People, Not much of a future

Pros

Great company culture. Tries really hard to create a place where employees are valued. Focused on being mission and value driven. Good benefits, Fair Pay. Office Snacks. Great Pioneer Square location.

Cons

The business and model just doesn't have much of a future. Don't let anyone fool you - its not a high growth tech unicorn. Its a SEO marketing and sales company that needs to figure out how to be as lean and optimized as possible to drive profits. Don't get me wrong it has a future to be really successful at a fairly narrow charter. But its not going to disrupt the beauty and elective treatment space as is. Too much business baggage, technical debt, and not a strong enough leadership to make big shifts happen. A lot of people were hired in a short period of time to help make the company do something big - it was the wrong team, wrong place, wrong time. Now they are all gone.

Thank you for your feedback. You are exactly right that we need to make changes in order to be the high growth, iconic consumer brand that we know we can be. Many of those changes are already underway, and the entire company is focused on execution. We are also focused on getting the right people in the right roles and driving a more performance-oriented culture. We agree we need a strong management team and better consumer experience. Where we disagree is about the overall business opportunity. This is already a large market, growing rapidly, benefiting from favorable secular and demographic trends and many under-served adjacencies. Consumers are increasingly demanding the transparency we provide and looking to us to help make these decisions easier. Not only is the market opportunity and consumer demand significant, RealSelf is uniquely positioned to win.

Pros

+ Great positive energy across employees + Free snacks + Nice newly expanded office + Exciting audience and interesting business challenges

Cons

- Strategic vision for the company changes almost quarterly - Career/Employee development is a buzzword tossed around the company that is rarely applied - Constantly changing management makes moving the ball forward difficult - Siloed teams that often don't work well together

It is never easy to give difficult feedback and appreciate your willingness to do so. It is my belief that we must always be learning and evolving as a company while keeping a keen eye on the customer journey. I fully agree that right now we need a clear strategy more than ever. Our upcoming All Hands is going to offer greater clarity and context to where we are headed as a company, brand, and team. I also agree with you that our culture within RealSelf is the key to our fast and thoughtful growth. If you haven’t already taken full advantage of our employee development grant, our quarterly mentor program or our career pathing site, I think you will find these very helpful tools for your development here. Please know my door is truly always open and that I genuinely want to hear from our employees, especially those that have direct feedback.

Leadership is the biggest problem here

Pros

Downtown location, business is doing fine, many employees are positive great people. Lots of good people here, just not at the top.

Cons

RealSelf has become a revolving door of talented people who leave when they realized the CEO has no vision and several of the managers are not qualified to run teams. It seems like a startup until you realize how long it's been around. Search on LinkedIn and you'll see how many people have come and gone and were there for less than a year. It's a red flag just how many people the company has burned through. Some of the teams are more functional than others, like the sales team is happier than the product team. It's a very open secret that the head of product has driven out an alarming number of people, especially women. They have also started firing people out of the blue, which has been a blow to morale.

As you noted, we are indeed a growing company full of smart, talented professionals that share a sense of passion and purpose in their work. I’m glad that you feel the same. I personally have found the team to be seriously empowering, and sincerely open to feedback and growth. I am disappointed to read that when it comes to team management your experiences were otherwise. As a company, we always looking to improve and recently have implemented a new training and review program aimed at helping managers and employees continue learning and growing both personally and professionally. This program was a direct result of internal research and conversations with team members to better understand how we can support personal and professional growth. Ultimately our success depends on our ability to build a strong, diverse culture that values learning, exploration and teamwork. – Lauren Sato, VP of People
