A Company with potential, but suffering from growing pains.

Pros

Young company! Lots of hunger to prove themselves and create great art. The desire to do better and better as an artist is very evident. Another benefit is that the small team means that you are given more chances to work on things that are far above your pay grade. The building is nice as well, especially after the renovation.

Cons

The entire business model of Reel FX is based around taking advantage of the thirst of the young talent. They assign projects which are incredibly difficult and basically impossible to finish in the allotted time given. They do that because they know that the young people working will work tons and tons of overtime to get the work done and to a very high quality. A quality which is much higher than what they are paying for. Overall they subsidize their business model by taking advantage of the people they hire. That causes a lot of people to get depressed and suffer from burn out.

Pros

Amazing group of artists and co-workers. One of the best places I've ever worked in my 15 years of experience. These artists work their butts off and care so much about each other and the studio that it's hard not to feel the same way. There is a layer of people in management positions on the floor with the artists that truly care about the people and are trying very hard to make some really good changes. Unfortunately they are in a constant battle with the boys upstairs on what seems to be all issues listed below. . .

Cons

No Overtime! The studio keeps shutting down the idea that as an animation studio they need to pay overtime which in fact many (read here: ALL) of the employees feel is some shady way for them to find a loophole with the DOL to just not compensate properly. Got technical issues? RFX does! The ever changing pipeline and overall lack of leadership in the technical areas lead to so many issues us artists will literally sit for DAYS not able to work on our assignments. Then guess what happens when their issue is fixed? Overtime! And don't you dare say anything about it or you will be looked at as a bitter and negative employee that just won't "take one for the team." Company will constantly beta test new things during an actual production. And they will actually think this is a good idea. . . the most recent (besides the new pipe again of course) is our internal tracking software. Doesn't work and there are no long term plans for it to work. It appears that they never do any salary research whatsoever and when they do get experienced people to come to Dallas it's only because of the state of the industry and that artists are desperate for work. It's either change your career, or Reel FX.

Pros

The Artists and production people are talented and great to work with. Insurance is good

Cons

Really this is just a rehash of many of the other reviews. The boys network of management. Promoting failure. Long time employees promoted to positions without the proper qualifications. Favoritism. There are a few bad apples that will throw people under the bus to management. Continually scheduling projects with a pie in the sky approach instead of looking at the reality of the time and resources it takes to do the work. You can say "it works on paper" repeatedly but that doesn't make it a reality. Lack of good leadership leads to many people on the floor not taking ownership of the work. Mediocre or half done work is sent down the pipe and the reasoning is "we'll fix it in lighting." The fact that lighting is always the department that bears the brunt of poor planning, limited resources, and getting all the problems to solve doesn't seem to matter. Read the reviews most of them are spot on.
