Be careful of the hype

Pros

There are some really great and smart people there, especially in Product Development and Data Science. Cool offices and super location.

Cons

It seems that RiskIQ has thrown in some employee incentives for positive reviews. Be careful. Check out their alumni network, which is oddly extensive. High turnover in sales. Heavy dependance on customer success for implementation. Note all male executive team and a lengthly VP Marketing vacancy. They brought a talented CFO out of retirement, which often means the investors aren't happy. Some in the industry say that RiskIQ isn't even a security company - they find and take down fraudulent websites. Very high sales/engineer ratio.

Good Intentions. Poor Execution

Pros

- Healthy work/life balance - Plenty of attractive benefits and perks - HQ office in downtown SF - Healthy growth and opportunities for customer-facing departments.

Cons

- Engineering and research feels like it's being overlooked in favor of bolstering the pre- and post-sales areas of the business. - Very weak management structure in parts of the org. - Core decisions made by a select group of "long-timers" making it difficult for newcomers to feel like they can contribute and influence decision-making. - Lagging tech stack in places for a company still in its startup phase. If innovation doesn't occur will likely make attracting the best engineering talent difficult.

Overbearing founders and lack of interest in people capital, hemorrhaging people

Good Location in Downtown SF Smart People

Cons

Ancient technology stack. Founders are overbearing, neurotic and held unaccountable. Yet they inject themselves all over the company and projects. Don't count on them for any type of positive feedback or most interactions in general. Super high turnover of key positions. No subject matter experts in engineering and lack of domain experience. No investment in people over the long term. Lead to a desert of engineers with ability, but no idea how to accurately develop and sell the product. Product constantly changes directions and they have no idea how to sell what they have. Lack of vision. Lack of employee appreciation. Culture is completely non-existent. Profitability over people has lead to massive layoffs and fragmented teams running on bubble gum and paper clips.

As a co-founder and CEO of RiskIQ, my mission is to build a best-in-class enterprise security company that is committed to providing exceptional service to our customers over the long-haul. That requires that we build a self-sustaining business (i.e. both growing and profitable) inside of our three core values: (1) customer-first; (2) passionate curiosity; and (3) get your hands dirty. That is an incredibly ambitious mission, and I am accountable to RiskIQ's employees, customers, partners and shareholders to fulfill on that mission. In doing so, my co-founders and I (along with the entire RiskIQ team) take a hands-on approach, and we hold others to account on fulfilling on our mission and living our values. Most of our employees are aligned with this approach, and they appreciate that RiskIQ's founders are closely involved in the business. But I recognize that others may not be, and for those employees, it may occur as overbearing and profit-driven. To those employees, I nevertheless thank them for their contribution to RiskIQ and I wish them the best.
