Avoid working for IT at Ropes and Gray

Pros

I had some great coworkers, with whom I am still in touch. Good benefits. Salary was fine, but not spectacular, especially considering the level of stress I felt in this job.

Cons

Working in the IT Department (for only a few months before I was let go) was the worst work experience I have had in my life. This includes working as a dishwasher in a cafeteria! I was given unclear direction about how I was to be spending my time from day to day and was basically expected to train myself. A few months in, I suddenly started receiving negative feedback on my performance, and then I was told I hadn't improved quickly enough and was let go. In every other IT job I have had before and since, I have been considered a top-performing employee. I had a new job within a month, and I've since found out that almost everyone I worked with at Ropes and Gray has either left due to the working conditions, or been fired.

Pros

I have met some really nice people that i'm glad to have had in my life and still touch base with every so often both professionally and personally.

Cons

Bullying and manipulation seem to be the top two management techniques most used in the User Support group. The group turnover rate is ridiculously high and when someone left because they were fired it was 9 times out of 10 not warranted. Seems the manipulation starts with the CIO and gets filtered down thru many of the groups the CIO manages yet User Support gets the bulk of it as if supporting the customers is at the bottom of the barrel yet you are supposed to be highly skilled and customer focused.

Pros

Spectacular compensation. Great benefits. Beautiful offices. Partners and associates congenial and cooperative.

Cons

Dismal business management . Factions at war with one another seeking to consolidate power and influence. resulting in massive failures and losses that are routinely hidden from disinterested partners. Highly stressful environment (and I came from the financial services sector). Let's just say I never needed my health insurance benefits until I worked at Ropes & Gray, and haven't needed them again since I quit.
