Rush University Medical Center reviews

I am going to try to provide only true statement, not emotional ones. I don't regret the time I spent at Rush because I learned how NOT to run an organization. Terrible culture, across every single department. The Quality Department is by far the worst place to work, probably in the entire city of Chicago. They lie about data and honestly treat people like garbage In my entire career, I have never seen anything like it. In the past 4 years, each year there has been 90% turnover. They allow MDs to throw things at nurses, the nurse staffing ratio is getting cut, a large % of MDs do not believe in Family Centered Rounds, and there are slient layoffs every most years. I was a internal consultant and I worked across many departments so I was able to get a wide perspective. Do not work here.

In general, they don’t respect newer employees. Turnover and burnout is pretty high here, so, newer employees are not viewed as a welcome sight, but more of a nuisance. They are a teaching hospital, so, they like to hire younger, inexperienced people they can mold. It also helps with costs and offering lower wages. Working from home is viewed very negatively here because they don’t trust their employees, which is a very ancient way of thinking in 2020. However, at the moment, they are forced to allow non-medical employees to work remotely because of the pandemic. Salaries are not competitive, but they are a community hospital, so, that is understandable. Many people have inflated egos here and they like to belittle those who are not at the same level, so, thicker skin is definitely needed. You have to pay for parking, which is a little ridiculous. It’s expensive and impossible to find parking. There is a 2 year waiting list for a parking pass. Your PTO is is misleading. For holidays (such as Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc.) the time comes out of your accrued PTO. Rush makes sure to let you know their political affiliations, which is an HR no-no. And, I identify as a progressive and a liberal. If you’re not a liberal, you will not be welcomed here. I’ve had people ask my age and ethnicity here, which is extremely unprofessional and a violation of various HR codes. Lastly, there is a lot of gate keeping and red tape. It is impossible to get anything done here. And, it takes months to receive access and permissions. At first I thought the delays were because of COVID. But, I soon learned that the inefficiencies are normal here. Employees lack accountability, so, it’s hard to do your job if you work on a team or rely on other teams. When I first joined here, I didn’t understand why people left Rush after 1-2 years. I can see now why people leave. I definitely will not be staying here long myself. No job or company is perfect, but Rush's reputation does not match the internal dysfunction. Please be aware and careful when accepting a position. If you are younger and newer to your career, you will learn as much as they like you. They will not hold your hand and you will have to figure things out on your own with little to no support. So be prepared for that. If you’re more experienced, view this company as a “nice to have.” Know that Rush looks great on a resume but you will have to pay for it and it will come with some mental sacrifice.
