Pros

A niche industry that genuinely could help people

Cons

Despite the polished external image and reputation attached to certain senior figures, the internal reality felt chaotic, political, and deeply unhealthy. The Hereford operation is dominated by a protected inner circle where relationships and loyalty seem to matter more than professionalism, accountability, or competence. Different standards appear to apply depending on who you are aligned with, which created a culture of distrust, frustration, and silence. There was a constant atmosphere of instability. Endless cost-cutting, repeated layoffs, and reactive decision-making have created an environment where employees feel undervalued and permanently on edge. Even small things became symbolic of the wider situation. When staff are noticing cuts to basics like hot chocolate supplies, it says a lot about the overall atmosphere and priorities. Unfortunately, many of the stereotypes people associate with American corporate culture felt absolutely accurate here. Financial decisions appeared to outweigh almost everything else, including employee wellbeing, operational stability, customer relationships, and long-term trust. Customers and industry contacts are not blind to what has been happening either. Confidence has declined significantly over time, and the loss of contracts and experienced staff felt less like bad luck and more like the predictable outcome of poor leadership decisions, short-term thinking, and chronic mismanagement. Safeguard has become a laughing stock in the pre-hospital trauma world ; only due to their vast portfolio of products do some customers still remain. What made it worse was the huge disconnect between external branding and internal reality. Leadership are far more focused on protecting image and reputation than addressing the behaviours, culture, and operational problems employees were actually dealing with day to day. Maybe this is because said leaders are being recompensed at levels they know they will never attain elsewhere. There are still a small number of good people within the business working extremely hard under difficult circumstances, but morale has been broken for a long long time. For anyone that values their mental health, avoid this company, it takes a very long time to recover.

Don’t work here if you value your sanity

Pros

There are a few dedicated employees who try to make it a better place.

Cons

This company is a sinking ship. They have the inability to retain staff, as they are overworked and undervalued. I worked for the company for a very short period and even in that time I can think of 7+ staff members that left in that period. Management have no idea what they are doing or even more importantly, what their staff are doing. There is little to no training structure. They like to use the word resilience as a compliment, but really they mean “I can’t believe you haven’t snapped yet”. Clear polite communication doesn’t exist within the teams, let alone between the departments. It is very much like listening to children bicker in the school yard. One person will say one thing and then another something else, which makes for very unhappy customers. This is a company that is meant to be manufacturing and providing products for emergency services, but several customers have been waiting 6+ months for products. Common sense does not prevail here! One of the worst company’s I have worked for. They will make false promises and be unable to deliver on them. They will also lie to your face and all the managers seem unable to apologise even when they are quite clearly in the wrong. You know the place is bad when recruitment companies make remarks on their reputation!
