Pros

modern campus, competitive compensation, subsidized food, on-campus gym

Cons

On the surface, SRA appears to have everything needed to make it a world-class research center; however its terrible management and unhealthy corporate culture have turned the place into a Kafkian nightmare to be avoided by anyone who cares about their carrier. SRA's biggest problem is its extremely incompetent senior management, which does not understand science or technology and does not appear to have any idea about people or project management. Here is one of many examples: months after the arrival of the new SRA president in 2016, literally all SRA's senior researchers left the company because they were not able to work with him, and either were not replaced at all or were replaced by people without any technical skills, effectively leaving the lab without technical leadership. Another chronic problem at SRA is its complete lack of strategy or vision. SRA's strategic direction is defined by the Korean HQ and keeps changing every 6 months. This is not an exaggeration. Every six months existing projects are abandoned because they don't fit in the new direction, teams are dismissed and engineers either laid off or transferred to other projects, which typically don't match their skill set. This creates enormous turnover (I estimate that only ~10% of people stay at SRA for more than two years). On top of all this, Samsung has an extremely archaic and unhealthy corporate culture: management does not seek or hear feedback from engineers (other than "yes, sir"), communication and collaboration between teams is discouraged (other teams are viewed as competition), engineers are seen as completely interchangeable (people are being routinely transferred to projects that do not match their expertise). SRA management does not seem to understand or value its reputation as an employer. They lie during interviews, arbitrarily change people's responsibilities, set meaningless and infeasible goals, demand results without providing the resources needed to achieve those results, etc. As a result, SRA's reputation within both research and engineering communities has been completely ruined, making it impossible for the company to attract good people. The situation is unlikely to change any time soon: I am sure that Samsung's top management is well aware of all this, but apparently considers this to be a healthy and productive work environment.

Pros

- Reasonable to good compensation, if they really want you and you negotiate hard. - Great benefits. - Good lunch. - Beautiful buildings.

Cons

- Project churn due to turnover of senior management. 3 SRA presidents in past 3 years. - Heavy-handed control from HQ. - Exclusion of non-Korean speakers. I sat through many meetings with or at HQ that were 100% in Korean. Key discussion in important local meetings usually in Korean. You learn to smile and tune out. - Extremely aggressive competition between different groups within SRA, and between SRA, different parts of HQ and other over-seas centers. Leaders from other centers will tell you privately not to try and compete with them. But then they're all smiles when the boss is in the room. Nasty. Juvenile. Broken. - Constant complaints at all levels about how expensive Silicon Valley is and how anything you propose should be done somewhere else, for much less money. - Stressed out local managers. Who will leave first? You or your manager?

Pros

Samsung has a big brand which makes it possible to get meetings with people external to the company. Once you leave though, everyone is aware of the reputation of SRA in SV. On the plus side, everyone will understand why you left.

Cons

The culture of Samsung involves lots and lots of dispatchers from the home office who have created a culture of hoarding information, spying, and control. Local hires that are in leaderships are compensated extremely well and so they act in a way that will ensure their continued employment. The time you spend here will be spent learning how to operate within Samsung without learning things that will help you outside of Samsung. As you will see, I gave a lot of stars to compensation because they have to pay everyone a ton of money to work there. They also give titles away. Everyone is senior or a director or a senior director. Amusingly, the first President they hired to oversee software development in Mountain View comes out of 20 years at the home office. He originally started as a tanker ship designer. This is a company which does not trust instinct, taste, employees, or customers. If a VP did not think of the idea, it's obviously terrible. Unless those come from Apple in which case they are all over it. Case in point...the Samsung watch did not exist until Apple rumors of a watch percolated. The Samsung connected home was a back burner item until HomeKit was announced during 2013 WWDC.

Samsung Research America Response

Thank you for the review. These claims of spying and hoarding information are extremely troubling and does not represent the culture we expect from our team at SRA. We aim to be at the forefront of innovation and research through collaboration. Therefore, it would greatly help if you could contact me at erica.ho@partner.samsung.com so that I can better understand your concern about management and provide the appreciation our employees deserve.
