Pros

Amazing work experience, a lot of exposure to domestic and foreign projects for renewables, coal, combined cycle plants from development to construction. Work with the utilities and developers to support their business needs. Fast paced projects.

Cons

Company is very outdated. Management came through engineering who have been with the company 20-40 years. Therefore management lacks current prospective on how to connect with employees and don't understand the younger generation mentality. For example, there is little flexibility. All policies written in hundreds of procedures. With current technology, should allow flex hours and work offsite as long as the work can be done but management will not allow it. Younger engineers used as disposable employees. Promotions in the first 5 years are based on tenure and not on performance. Raises do not even cover inflation and again you can be the best performing employee and get a similar raise to someone that does no work. Culture like many companies is what can you do to make money for the owners. If you make them money on projects, there's no thank you or career reward. If you lose money on project, you get chewed out by the owners.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a thoughtful review. We are very pleased you find the work experience provided at S&L to be “amazing.” It is very true that we have a tenured staff of engineers at S&L, and it is a point of pride for us that 20% of our employees have remained with the firm for 25+ years. It is because of their depth of knowledge we are able to provide our less experienced engineers the mentorship needed to build a foundation for their careers, and we genuinely value their dedication. We firmly believe in promoting from within, and do recognize in doing so we have a responsibility to our employees to provide management training as they advance their careers into supervisory positions. Although we provide ongoing management training sessions in-house, we do understand it can be beneficial to seek an outside perspective. As a result, last year we undertook an initiative to begin providing formal leadership training and partnered with an outside firm specializing in this area. All employees on our leadership team have been attending the first sessions of what will be a larger curriculum dedicated to honing the skills required to continue to grow as successful leaders. Thank you again for providing such details comments. We hope you continue to enjoy the variety of work offered at S&L.

Pros

They pay for you to run races, bowl and cater lunches now and then - you get your own computer - really don't subject yourself to this - desperately looking for another job

Cons

HR is not one iota out to help you - one hint of a liability and suddenly your job is eliminated - at some point this company is going to have some hefty lawsuits

Pros

Diverse projects. Large knowledge pool in the company. Good for engineers just starting out.

Cons

Promotions based on flair rather than skills, experience, and accomplishments. No transparency on promotions and what they're based on. Management will claim promotions are based on position descriptions, but this is usually not true. Good for engineers just starting their career but growth and opportunity slows down rather than speeds up.
