Pros

The office/facilities at the HQ (Reston) are decent. Competitive salary, then again they are a federal contractor.

Cons

Career mobility-I had never worked in an office that literally has no plan/professional development options for their corporate staff. There was also no purpose in your pitching a business idea because it wasn't making its way to upper management. They could care less. Compensation-offers were made without rhyme or reason, so someone with less experience could be making significantly more than you just because they asked. Lack of job security-even if you weren't a contractor, there was always talk of layoffs especially around the sequester. Management did absolutely nothing to put people's minds at ease. Apparently after I left they did lay off many people in HR/recruiting. Those who didn't get fired, quit. Lack of quality hires/employees-The recruitment process was akin to throwing spaghetti against the wall for both the corporate office and contract positions. Management didn't really care about the quality of candidates just as long as the positions were filled asap. Dysfunctional processes- In addition to management not doing their homework on some of the global systems used daily (and being to cheap to fix the issues) , some of the basic processes for approvals were highly inefficient. This made everyone's jobs significantly harder.

Pros

The people. The people were dedicated, committed and generally liked their clients. Other than that, there were/are no pros for working for Serco

Cons

There is nothing good that I can say about this company. The contract that we were under was micro-managed to the n-th degree. Hours worked (even salaried employees could not work past 40 hrs and many times it was necessary), time off was scrutinized heavily and working from home was forbidden. Basically people were too afraid of getting in trouble which left them paralyzed to do anything pro-active or take the initiative to make things better. Pay was complete garbage as well.

Pros

2 weeks vacation after 1 year employment. $11.49 an hr pay rate is high for this area(London KY) and for the pot smokers, there is no drug testing required to obtain a job here and nothing is said if you smoke one on your break and come in smelling like weed. No one cares as long as they get paid for you sitting in your seat.

Cons

Discriminates against woman on maternity leave and when they return and need to pump breast milk. Coworker was forced to return to work two weeks before her doctor released her to come back to work. Was told she would be fired is she didn't come in. Then harassed her about the time it took her breast pump even though her quality and production was near 100%. This all happening while we haven't had any work to do for months. Weeks go by when not a single task is completed by an employee, but no one can miss a day without the threat of being fired. Regardless of being under a doctor's care or leaving work in an ambulance.
