Pros
Some of the people here are great to work with and fun to be around. The employees in sales seemed to be the only ones enjoying their jobs. Due to high turnover, there are opportunities to move up quickly (but don't expect a pay raise)
Cons
Expect to hire in and watch your coworkers around you leave at any opportunity. I got more calls from corporate recruiters than customers during the first two weeks; it would seem most have figured out that S&L employees are easy targets to pluck away, and I'll tell you why- -Horrible compensation for the industry (expect about 50% of what your colleagues are getting) -Lack of training, no onboarding/training/continuous education programs -Departments are structured in a way that invites conflict Example: "Engineering" Department (badly) designs equipment and refuses to listen to customer requests. Customer receives equipment (3 weeks late) and other departments are left to handle the complaints. -Restricting and pointless procedures cause unnecessary lag in internal processing, not uncommon for orders to be 4-6 weeks behind schedule -Sales force based on Manufacturer's Reps that are more than happy to throw the factory under the bus and not take accountability for their misinformation/lack of effort early in the design phase (some Reps were fantastic to work with however) -Outdated dress code requires slacks and a tie (as of May 2015) for Engineering employees to sit behind a desk (while fielding calls from angry customers) -Their business, quite literally, is crap, which has never been glamorous -Family-owned company run by one of the worst business minds in North America Example: executive decision to build equipment for a foreign customer in the United States (despite the capability to manufacture in the customer's country) ended horribly. End result was a badly designed, over-cost, late piece of equipment that tarnished S&L foreign reputation. -Technology is a foreign concept (emails are printed on a regular basis due to an executive-level fear of storing any data by electronic means). Company also refuses to share drawings with any level of detail with clients, causing confusion between customer and contractor and restricting the ability of S&L products to be incorporated with other segments of projects Advice to Engineers: steer clear. A long term commitment to this sinking ship will make sure your career sinks along with it.
