Pros

Speed of innovation: Company is fast, turns around things quickly Modern tech: Can use all of the leading technology. Many other companies are stuck in the 80s. Not SoFi. Industry disruptor: the business model is NOT proven and by definition won't be proven until the company makes money ... but ... working at an industry disruptor like SoFi is interesting and offers unique challenges you won't find anywhere else

Cons

The biggest downside (or perhaps a more fitting term - 'con') for SoFi are the people who work there. Its full of unbearable employees with no respect for anyone. When they were recruiting me to join the company, they made a ton of promises and shared lofty career plans with me in order to get me to leave my current job and come over. They promised a team, visibility, and a place to make a positive mark on the company. Instead I've been turned into a tool. No one cares about building new things. New ideas are constantly ignored in favor of the 'easy' status quo. No one cares about doing any real data analytics, its all just spreadsheet jockeys masquerading as 'data driven' personalities producing numbers that confer management narratives. Almost immediately upon joining the company, I was quickly told that I'd be expected to do the work of 3+ people. I was also told that plans to hire a team for me were shelved because "I definitely didn't need a team to do my job, I'm good enough after all". I'm also not even allowed to have my own book of work - my job is whatever my boss says it is when he logs in. That's not a job, that's a tool. My manager simply ignores any and all emails and internal messages I send him. He also straight up ignores me on virtual meetings. I'll ask a question - ignored. I'll make a comment - ignored. He's also not interested in having 1x1's with me to establish what exactly I'm supposed to be doing and/or what my personal goals are. When I've raised these concerns with his management, the reply was 'just do what he says'. I'm also expected to essentially be on call for him 24/7. I've been called by him at 2am, when I was in the hospital, and on paid time off. He does not take 'no' for an answer, so I've simply resorted to ignoring him. Since joining, I have also been asked to commit what I would consider to be ethical violations in the name of furthering company narratives. I've been asked to fudge numbers, obscure data, and whitewash reality in order to propagate the goal of profitability. I refused to complete the task. If I'm asked to break the law, I will report them to the SEC & OCC. I had high expectations for this job. Without a doubt, it has been the worst job of my career. Its pretty clear I was hired because they wanted to be able to tell the regulators they had poached someone from the place I used to work at. I cannot get out of this company fast enough. I don't know if my experience is the same throughout the entire company. I hope other organizations are better.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful and candid review. We take your comments very seriously as listening to and acting on feedback from our employees is the only way we will be able to achieve our “best place to work” ambitions. We are extremely disheartened to hear working at SoFi isn’t meeting your expectations and we hope to have the chance to build back trust with you. We know that building a great culture starts with excellent managers, which is why we continue to develop and implement programs that help equip them with the skills and support they need to lead their teams in fair, equitable, and inclusive ways. We are so sorry to hear that has not been your experience thus far. We want all of our employees to feel supported by their leaders and would never want you to feel that you’ve had to compromise your ethics, or have been ignored when support is needed. If you aren't already aware, we have an EthicsPoint hotline (contact information can be found in the Code of Conduct) where employees are able to lodge a confidential concern at any time. We hope for the opportunity to improve your experience here, so if you’re open to it, please reach out to me directly, or email our team at employeerelations@sofi.org or at glassdoor@sofi.org. Take care, Chief People Officer

Absence of management

Pros

Get to work with cutting edge technology

Cons

Complete lack of organization or accountability from management. Rarely interact with management, and when you do, they are oblivious and unaccountable. It's pulling teeth to get documentation out of management, and when you do it's so rough and ready that it's not useful. Put shortly, I'm unsure what value management provides at SoFi. At my level, I do not see any output. "Feedback" is touted here, but when given upwards is met with deflection and gas-lighting. "Why haven't you been saying something?" is a common response to feedback, while you are actively saying that very something. "Ownership" is often touted at SoFi as well, but rarely do you find management stepping up and owning they own role. Engineers are left to do project management, often left to define requirements, and then pay the price for the disfunction. All of these cons are discouraged by SoFi's company values, but the company values seem to resonate with very few in management. They'd rather appear as if everything is fine and hear no evil than "Be Gritty and Accountable" (value 7) or "Do the right thing" (value 6).

Hi there, and thank you for the 5+ years you have dedicated to working at SoFi. Your commitment to living our values is evident, and as you know, they are a foundational aspect of our culture - how we think about hiring people, how we evaluate our own performance, and of course how we work together to achieve our mission. We know that having world-class leaders is a critical part of building a 'best in class culture' which is our ambition, so we're very disappointed to hear you do not feel management is living our values, taking ownership, or allowing space for feedback. You may know that manager excellence is the top focus area for our Learning & Development team, and they continue to roll out trainings, resources, and support so managers can learn how to lead the SoFi way, with our values as our north star. If you're open to it, we'd love to continue this conversation so we can further understand how we can improve the experience for you. You can reach out to us at glassdoor@sofi.org. You can also connect with your PBP. Thanks for the candid feedback, and for being on this journey with us.

Pros

None - don’t waste your time or mental health.

Cons

Toxic blame culture … if you want to operate like GE under Jack Welch, then you better figure out how to manage. FinTech? Go to Figure

We're sorry if your mental health was affected, but we hope you were able to take advantage of some of the benefits we have to support our employees' wellbeing. You may have left before we rolled out our revamped manager training for new managers and newly promoted managers, which is designed to give them the tools to manage with empathy and best support their teams.
