Pros

Great mission and unique product.

Cons

- Toxic leadership from the top down. Cliques, lack of feedback/transparency. - Poor pay structure. The strategy is to hire candidates at 50% of market value. - Performance is arbitrary and based on perceived likeability. - Ironic in that they are a mental health company with a culture that makes employees need mental health. They are selling mental health but are not considerate of the mental health of their employees. - Poor communication. Not clear on what success looks like in each role. - Join at your own risk and make sure you vet your boss.

Misguided leadership, favoritism, no communication

Pros

While not a very diverse company racially, they do a decent job of hiring people of different ages. Some of the teams have thoughtful leadership. People are generally kind and considerate. Shout out to the talent team for bringing in good people.

Cons

SonderMind has a communication issue. None of the departments talk to each other. This leads to doubling up on work, squabbling over who runs a project, or completely dropping the ball because no one knows what their job is. They also hire so many directors and managers without hiring more staff to support existing individual contributors who are being asked to do too much and being burned out. The C suite is detached and demanding.

Genuine people with problematic leadership

Pros

Most of my peers at SonderMind were genuine and hardworking. They truly cared about each other and improving access to mental health care.

Cons

Senior leadership was very disconnected from the day-to-day employee experience and challenges. Many of my peers were working long hours, burnt out, and anxious which is concerning for a company focused on mental health. I saw employees expressing this to senior leadership and not receiving empathy or understanding in return. I did not see leadership address any of these concerns and instead many talented people decided to leave. There were not any diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and employees who brought forward ideas in this space were not supported. I do not recommend Sondermind to people of color or anyone from an underrepresented group. Diversity is not a priority and senior leadership did not show any desire to change this during my time there.
