Pros

Seeing patients in a clinical setting is always my highlight of my career

Cons

Working for a group that has more chiefs than Indians, but the chiefs have difficulty making decisions on process improvements. Each site works under their "own way of doing things". There's a lack of systematic approach to process improvement, their behind the eight ball in EM. They have high rates of LWOT/LWBS, patient to provider, door to dispo and have hospital medicine clinicians as regional medical officers that have never worked a day in EM. It's extremely dysfunctional and embarrassing to the fellow EM Physicians and APPs due to incompetent leaders.

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback here. I always appreciate the openness of current and former colleagues, even when it's tough to take. Our practice model is really about empowering our leaders at the local level to meet the specific needs of the community they're serving, and to truly understand what it means to be in that emergency department day to day. At the national level, our people and processes are meant to provide additional support and strength to those local practices, and it sounds like that was a challenge in your hospital. I share your passion for better patient care and would welcome the chance to connect directly to hear more about your experience — you can reach out to belong@soundphysicians.com. — Tony Briningstool, CEO, Emergency Medicine

Pros

Decent benefits, including options for life insurance for the spouse

Cons

It is all about money, they work you to death! And still they expect to have “patient satisfaction” and good quality measures when adding more and more people to your list for the sake of the productivity. They call people off to increase the numbers in the list and avoid paying one more person (they do not pay for those day).

First and foremost, thank you for caring for our patients. The work you do as a hospitalist is essential to the well-being of the communities we serve. As CEO for Hospital Medicine, I have a responsibility to ensure we're not only taking better care of our patients, but also taking better care of each other. It sounds like the experience you're having isn't congruent with the culture we try to foster. I agree that medicine isn't a production line — and shouldn't feel that way to the folks providing care. Reach out to me directly via email, as I'd like to hear more about your pain points and how we might better address them. — Mihir Patel, CEO, Hospital Medicine

Pros

Work autonomously no micromanaging. 7 days on /7 days off schedule. RVU bonuses but pay often incorrect. CME reimbursement offered but often denied after being submitted due to "no budget".

Cons

Poor/ no support by upper management. Always understaffed and asked to see extra patients. Some APP see up to 29 patients as an acute care hospitalist. Pay significantly under market with high patient loads. APPs only paid for 10 hr day but carry same patient load as MDs who are paid for 12 hr.

Hello and thanks for sharing your honest thoughts here. First, thank you for your time with Sound and I wish you all the best in wherever your career has taken you next. I'm glad to hear you felt you were able to work autonomously with us. I'm disheartened, however, to hear that you felt unsupported and overworked in many ways. This isn't the experience we want our clinicians to have. I'd welcome a deeper conversation about your time with us – you can reach out to me at belong@soundphysicians.com. — April Burke, Vice President, Advanced Practice Providers
