Stable but limited

Pros

Work here because you believe in the mission of public transit, because you’ve burnt out at higher pressure jobs and want to relax into a more reasonable pace, or because you want the peace of mind of knowing you will still have your job tomorrow, even if it does not come with lots of growth opportunities.

Cons

Financial career growth is limited (at least in the IT and Communications worlds). It is generally known that if you want to be at Sound Transit in the long run but you also want to make more money, the best plan is to get a few years under your belt here, move to a different company for a big title bump, and then turn around and come back here for another title bump later. Staying here and growing through the ranks has left many long-term employees at the same salary that newbies are coming in at.

Do not Work for IT/Network engineering

Business Outlook

Pros

SoundTransit has good health benefits but nothing extraordinarily different from other companies. Other than that stay away

Cons

Network team is the worst. Everybody there is buying their time doing the bare minimum. Culture within the IT department is to have zero-ownership of projects. A very confrontational type of environment mainly by staff that has been the longer there. Lots of thing wrong that you will most likely blame for

Pros

Great place to work. Challenging work but supportive environment and very dedicated people. A lot of training and skills advancement opportunities.

Cons

Everyone has an opinion about the agency so no social event is safe if you tell people where you work. Lower pay than private sector.
