Pros

Not too closely supervised Reasonable performance expectations You leave your work at the workplace If you have a bad day, it's forgotten, not recorded for posterity You can do a lot worse for minimum wage

Cons

The usual minimum wage stuff -- too few hours spread out over too many people, a phony 'career ladder' that only leads to more work for less money, trimming shifts when things are 'slow' (e.g. scheduling people for 6 hrs, then sending them home after 4 or 5)

Little to no respect.

Pros

The benefits package for even part-time workers that was left behind by the old ownership is nice, even part-time workers get paid vacation and sick days. However, under the new ownership of Spartan stores most perks are being stripped.

Cons

They have little to no respect for their employees. Being spoken to condescendingly is the norm. Constructive feedback isn't something management specializes in. There isn't any effort put into solving employee problems. It's more of a place where people burn out quickly and quit to find a new job rather than doing anything to change the dysfunctional model of management. But all the while putting on an air that VG's is your friendly family grocery store :D
