Pros

Fast advancement as long as you put the effort in, decent pay, making continuous efforts for something

Cons

Speedway cares about Speedway, end of story. I had a great career at speedway, or so I thought. I worked 60-70 hours a week at a 50 hour salary. When 8 out of 10 store employees got covid-19 there solution was to close the store from 12am-5am, leaving myself and a part time employee to do the rest for 2 weeks. Even when covid-19 wasn't hitting at full strength, I saw dozens of other store managers stay at their store for 24-72 straight because they didn't have help or support. I've seen seen store managers and employees work every single day for weeks or months on end. Support from cooperate is low but make you feel personally responsible for their HR and hiring managers not helping you find worthy candidates. They hire anyone that doesn't have a felony.

Pros

Benefits are surprisingly good for full-timers They will accept any kind of prior management experience if you want to go straight into management They promote from within for the most part If you end up at a good store with a good crew, the job can be quite enjoyable Double pay if you work holidays (unless you're the general manager)

Cons

The corporate office has no idea what things are like at the store level Having to bounce back and forth between early mornings and late nights If you're at a 24 hour store, third shift only has one person working alone, so if that person doesn't show up, you get to work a double No work/life balance at all if you are management--you're on call 24/7 CSRs (cashiers) are pretty much allowed to do whatever they want because Speedway doesn't pay them enough so they never get enough applications in so they can't afford to fire anybody If you're not in the upper management's clique, you get to watch other people get away with things you were reprimanded for Most stores don't get anywhere near enough labor hours, but the monthly inspector still expects perfection and management's pay depends on how well this inspection goes General managers are expected to work at least 50 hours a week except on holidays and vacation, but they don't get overtime and will get pay docked if they work fewer than 50 hours Rules change by surprise almost every month, without warning, and of course we get marked off for it on the inspection We are required to hound people to get the rewards card and buy candy. Most customers don't care about either and will get very angry. Disciplinary action will follow if we don't push these If you're NOT at a 24-hour store, the alarm center constantly messes up and sends the police because they keep forgetting what time you are supposed to close, then the store gets billed for the false alarms, which comes out of the management's pay The 7-Eleven acquisition was my final straw-- they said they wouldn't franchise before the acquisition, but the DAY the transaction was posted, they backpedaled on everything they said.

Pros

Decent health insurance. 401k match.

Cons

ZERO Work/Life balance. Calls at all hours of day/night, while you are on vacation, or any other time you aren't in the store. Someone doesn't come in? Welcome to your 18 hour shift, don't think you'll be getting out of your 10+ hour shift tomorrow either. What will you hear when you ask for help? "We really appreciate all you do" or crickets.... There are NO BREAKS for lunch, you barely have time to use the restroom most days. Corporate just keeps heaping on the absurd requirements, in spite of ZERO properly staffed stores. They WILL NOT discuss the fact that you cannot attract and keep decent employees when you pay them barely above minimum wage and expect them to perform like they are being paid 100k. Pensions were just cancelled and our bonus requirements just DOUBLED what you had to hit to simply qualify.
