Pros

+ Nice offices/facilities, including an onsite fitness center + Decent salary and benefits (if negotiated) + ”Survivors’ comradery” of the remaining staff + Product / Brand potential

Cons

- Overreliance on cheap, inexperienced labor (interns) - Poor project management (priorities change hourly, fear tactics, unrealistic expectations) - Understaffed and often unequipped - Teams producing sub-standard work in lieu of satisfying unruly managers/directors - Empty promises and incentives created frequently to prompt additional productivity or simply elicit overtime. - “One strike” hire and fire = the company releasing unfit/untested products to market

Pros

There is nothing positive to say about this place.

Cons

It is well-known on the inside that Spireon keeps posting fake positive reviews on Glassdoor how great it is to work here. There are several mentions of them doing this in other reviews as well.

Thank you for your candid feedback. It’s disappointing to know that the validity of our Glassdoor reviews is being questioned. Our reviews come directly from both current and former employees and we certainly do not encourage or approve of anyone posting false reviews. As one of our core values states, “We Do What’s Right”, which includes fostering a work environment that thrives on respect and integrity. With this in mind, we provide many opportunities where employees can openly provide their honest feedback with management and our executive team, including methods that are completely anonymous. We work diligently to address any issues that are brought to our attention and we have made numerous changes across the company specifically based on the feedback we’ve received from employees. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities and speak with management to address any concerns you may have about our organization.

Pros

First of all, anyone considering working at Spireon should take the glowing reviews here with a healthy grain of salt. The company unapologetically encourages employees to post reviews on Glassdoor, and I know from personal experience that managers are heavy-handed with insisting that they be 100% positive reviews only. That being said, there are some legit reasons to work at Spireon if you’re a technologist. You will have the opportunity to grow highly-desired and highly marketable skills in the IoT space, with lots of interesting and challenging technical problems to be solved. Some of the remaining engineers are incredibly talented and are among the most loyal and hard working teammates a person could ask for. If you really want to take the plunge, just be sure to have the expectation of working here for 1-3 years max, building up some key tech skills, and move on to a much better company for (usually) much better pay.

Cons

So many to state, and honestly the company has little desire to do much other than give lip service in response to complaints. CEO was brought in by the former ownership group to restructure the company for sale. Now that’s been accomplished, he will be out the door by the end of the year. CTO may have a great resume, but he has the people skills of a wet cardboard box. His weak leadership style directly led to a mass exodus of top engineering talent. The remaining engineering senior management play favorites and encourage a culture where early and mid level employees are treated as nothing more than expendable resources (especially if viewed as an old-timer). Harsh and cutthroat would be an understatement. And finally, largely because they have difficulty attracting and retaining local engineers, nearly every aspect of engineering is getting pushed offshore. Mobile development, web development, test engineering, and manual QA are all getting sent to India-based contractors. I would not be surprised to see aspects of DevOps, Data, or Platform engineering also soon go offshore. This causes many of the local employees to have to work nearly around the clock in support of their offshore teams. If that’s not appealing (and it shouldn’t be) then Spireon is not the place for you.

We never like to hear that someone has had a less than favorable experience with the company. We do have aggressive goals, which is necessary to be the leader in the connected vehicle space. As a result, we need every employee to be fully engaged and pushing hard to achieve this, which is not for everyone. I am very proud of the extremely talented team we have built here at Spireon. It's the best team I've worked with in my 20 years in tech. Across every technology function - Product Management, SW and HW Engineering, DevOps, Technical Program Management, and IT - we have hired and retained some of the best and the brightest people in the industry. Many of our strongest contributors are those that have been with us the longest, and we value their dedication and loyalty. Our compensation and benefits are very competitive, and we work hard to ensure that it remains so. Over the past 2 years, we have indeed expanded our offshore presence. However, we have NOT decreased the size or strength of our on-shore team. Rather, we have expanded them and dramatically strengthened our bench of talented and experienced technologists. We are a dynamic company, and must leverage both off-shore and on-shore expansion to support this growth, as well as to enable our US-based personnel to better focus on future innovation. As a result, we have won several awards, filed a record number of patents, released industry-leading products, and achieved substantial growth in new product adoption. While we do encourage employees to post reviews on Glassdoor, we don’t dictate the contents of reviews. As the team's leader and a former naval officer, my management style is shaped by honesty, integrity, discipline and keeping cool under pressure. I have an open door policy, and am very interested in honest and direct feedback from anyone on the team at any time. I have worked hard to ensure that every team has strong leadership technically, as well as in motivating their teams and collaborating with their peers. In addition, we all work hard to facilitate the success of our teams by ensuring that every individual has the resources and tools they need to get their job done. I hope my response will help to shed light on some of the concerns described in this review. Once again, I regret seeing anyone leave unhappy, and I encourage any prospective candidates to speak to our current employees and not just former employees.
