Nice people who are bad at decisions

Pros

Pros: -Best middle managers I’ve ever worked for -People really encourage people to speak up in meetings -Most women I’ve ever worked with on an engineering team -Salaries are competitive -You’re actually *encouraged* to use that unlimited PTO

Cons

Cons: -No women in senior leadership at all -VERY few women outside of engineering -Everyone is so caught up in a collaborative, everyone-gets-buy-in mentality that decisions never get made. -Company is bad at learning from past errors in a blameless way. Engineering does retrospectives for incidents but they usually don’t get to the actual origin of incidents or address how to prevent them in the future, so they wind up being pretty pointless. -Tons of procrastination on real tech debt because it’s going to be too involved--there’s a lot of “that would require rebuilding _____.” If you need to rebuild it to make sure it scales, sometimes you need to bite the bullet and do that. -No one has an understanding of dependencies and which teams rely on which other teams for, which usually means that planning work is chaotic and honest but avoidable mistakes happen a lot. -Benefits are not great. Health insurance sucks, especially if you need to see a specialist/any out of network providers -The organization is weirdly hourglass shaped--plenty of senior leadership, very few middle managers, and TONS of individual contributors.

Great values, execution issues

Pros

- Genuinely passionate about music, with a big and growing impact on music production culture - Lots of kind and caring people - Real long term potential if execution problems can be addressed - Supportive and caring towards employees, especially during COVID

Cons

- Exec is not aligned on the future of the company, and the vision is too big to execute on effectively. - Difficulty having necessary tough conversations - High turnover on engineering - Lots of tech debt makes it hard to make progress - Clumsy with DEI. It comes from a genuine desire to grow, but folks from underrepresented groups have been put in uncomfortable positions as we 'have conversations as a company.' That said, I feel Splice's commitment is more real than I've seen elsewhere.

Your job is not safe here

Pros

I loved the people I worked with day to day. Smart, engaged, passionate. The technology we worked on was super interesting.

Cons

Upper management is incredibly political for such a small company. Not transparent with subordinates. They pride themselves on keeping headcount low and squeezing employees to the max. I saw multiple times people get laid off to hire other positions instead of keeping good people. Do not come here if you want a stable job.
