Very Weird Place

Pros

Free coffee in breakroom. Pay was decent.

Cons

Not sure where to begin. Pretty much a toxic team to work with, mostly from the top down. They knew my background when they hired me then seemed to become angry when I did what I was best at. I say "seemed" because it was really hard to understand the standing of anything since no clear direction was given and the managers were both very passive aggressive. We were required to give weekly updates on what was being done but would then be attacked in the meeting from left field for not meeting some mysterious goals that were never established in the first place. Also, the upper management constantly talked about how great it was going to be to take this company public, but there was absolutely no incentive for any other employees to care. We had zero equity in helping the company go public but it was constantly mentioned to us in company meetings. I was literally told "they don't like you to talk about that" by an employee that had been there for a while.

Dental done greedily

Pros

The clinicians are passionate and caring, and are wonderful people to work with. Many do their best to deliver on the Tend promise of “changing dentistry” and making the dentist not such an intimidating place to be. They deserve far better than they get, especially the hygienists and dental assistants.

Cons

Oh boy, where to start. Tend has a myriad of problems that start from the top and trickle all the way down to the bottom, affecting everything from patient care to employee satisfaction. Don’t be fooled by the sparkly ads and social media campaigns, at the end of the day, Tend only cares about production goals. This is accomplished through micromanagement at every level; corporate micromanages the studio managers, turning them into micromanagers themselves. This makes for an extremely unpleasant work environment, as new, unnecessary measures are constantly put in place to ensure studios can make as much production as possible. These include pressuring patients to schedule treatment, harassing them if they don’t, and overbooking schedules to increase doctor production/account for “possible falloff” which many times does not happen. This negatively affects the staff as well, as many feel constantly overworked and pressured to increase both their individual and studio production, even if they are part of the majority that see no benefit from it (only managers and doctors get bonuses). Employees are expected to constantly be in work mode, no matter what. I have seen employees harassed on vacation, shamed for calling out due to medical emergencies, and forced to come into work despite hurricanes and blizzards. At least one studio has even been forced to illegally operate without a doctor present, just for the slightest chance at a little more production. This company has very little regard for both patients and employees, and this has resulted in broken trust and an extremely high turnover rate.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Feedback from our current and former team members is extremely important to us and essential to helping us continue to improve the employee experience. We are sorry to learn that this was your experience. We strive to deliver on our promise to create an environment that both our patients and our teams enjoy. We are sorry to have let you down. Our dentists and hygienists are given the autonomy to provide the best possible care to their patients and are supported by a group of operational and clinical leaders that prioritize patient outcomes over quotas. We are an early stage company continuously learning and improving. Our most successful team members are nimble, flexible and driven to create experiences members look forward to. We reject the claim that any team was forced to practice illegally or come to work in conditions that were unsafe or hazardous. We would be grateful for the opportunity to speak with you about your experience to address these concerns. Please reach out to people@hellotend.com to continue the conversation.

Pros

fun work environment, great office space, learned a lot about dental

Cons

PTO and sick policy is strict, takes months to accrue any time off, when sick time is used you get in trouble, management does not listen/care about your frustration, have to pick up others work because of short staff, communication between departments is awful, been with Tend for over 2 years and have gotten no bonus or raise

Thank you for taking the time to share about your experience. We appreciate your feedback and are pleased to hear that you enjoy the work environment and office space at your location. We are also happy to know that you have been part of the team since our early days and value your dedication to the organization. We understand how important it is to listen and make changes based on employee feedback and take your comments and concerns seriously. Tend provides paid time off as a benefit to help you take time to refresh, rejuvenate, and spend time with friends and family. We did release a new paid time off policy for 2022 that divides PTO into two categories: vacation and sick time both accrued based on role and time with the Company. We will continue to work with each individual to ensure you feel supported and PTO is applied properly. We appreciate each of our studio teams and are constantly seeking ways to recognize the great work that you are doing. We so regret coming up short in this instance and are committed to continuing to look for ways to show how much you are appreciated, and deliver on our promise of bettering the dental experience for both our patients and our team members. We understand how frustrating breakdowns in communication across teams can be. This is an area we are always working to improve and will continue to iterate on as the company expands our footprint throughout the country. If you’re interested in continuing the dialogue, please reach out to us directly at at people@hellotend.com, or via AllVoices, our anonymous internal hotline. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
