Pros

The benefits are decent, and the PTO starts at 20 days a year which is nice. Senior management is accessible and friendly. Technology is becoming more modern and easier to use, albeit slowly and clumsily. If you are a relationship driven person, you’ll thrive with the agency relationships. Diversity and inclusivity make this company stand out, for sure. There are a lot of opportunities to join diverse groups and teams to help the company grow and change with the times.

Cons

The volume of work is astronomical, and the expectations are high - every item is broken down into “service levels”, if you miss the service level by 30 seconds it is late. You are graded every month on your service level performance. Phones auto answer, you don’t have the option to dismiss a call and call someone back, it’s like working in a call center - which is NOT the job description they give you when you’re hired, so make sure to ask about it during your interview. They monitor everything, listen to your calls, ask where you are if you’ve stepped away for longer than 4 minutes. You don’t get breaks, the hours are not flexible even if you are salary, and people work nights and weekends to try to keep up with the workload and are not paid to do so. There just isn’t enough staff. If you value freedom to manage your desk and your work and tend your own garden, this isn’t the right company for you. That doesn’t mean it is a bad place to work, but it’s very micro-management oriented.

Solid employer with some glaring flaws

Pros

Informal, relaxed work environment with a good work/life balance. I have been fortunate to have good leadership above me throughout my time at Hanover and felt, for the most part, they were invested in my development and what would help me out in the long run. The workplace itself is your typical cube farm with '90's styling, however, the company is trying to modernize and foster a more youthful environment and benefits to stay competitive and attract new, younger talent. I give them a thumbs up for listening to employee feedback and trying to create a more flexible, relaxed workplace that appeals to more employees. They are also working on trying to develop ways to attract and maintain talent right out of college and I think there will be some more changes on the horizon in terms of flexible work schedules, benefits, etc.

Cons

Pay is really nothing special; bonuses and merit increases are minimal at best and if you are interested in substantial pay increases, you will constantly need to be on the lookout for better job opportunities within the company. On that note, keep in mind that Hanover is a publicly traded company, not a mutual, so they are far more beholden to their bottom line and shareholders than their employees. While the company talks the talk re: developing and promoting from within, keep in mind that every hiring manager has their own plan in place and will only promote from within whenever it is easiest or they absolutely cannot avoid it. I believe there are a lot of really talented and hardworking young-in-career people at Hanover that are not receiving the opportunities for development that they truly deserve. Recently, I have gotten the vibe that there are an increasing amount of employees that feel devalued and receive less support than they did previously. When I first started here, there was more emphasis placed on treating and rewarding the employees and within the past year or two, that emphasis has shifted to "cost-saving" measures in order to be a more "efficient" organization. For all of the talk of how great the company is doing, it certainly doesn't feel that way to a lot of people.

Pros

They give you a paycheck that’s it.

Cons

This company is awful for anyone with morals. They try to push an agenda of woke ideas that include ESG & making anyone not a minority feel like they are less. Funny thing is I’m a minority and I was very uncomfortable with the agenda set. If your a Christian you will be forced to participate in this agenda and your beliefs don’t matter. I was confronted by a manager when I didn’t want to participate in pro LBGQ activities. I felt uncomfortable with all of this and have since left the company. They also work you to the bone and always seem to find a reason or way expect more 60+ claims a month with inspections expected.
